Zero signs of the rut here.I scouted 3 properties yesterday, and walked my guts out,and never found the first scrape or rub..Which is very odd, they are usually scrapeing by now.

Jefferson County lots of fresh rubs and scrapes yesterday. First solid sign in a couple of weeks and it was fresh. Saw buck chasing doe yesterday and the one killed Thursday by my hunting buddy was chasing a group of does.

Nothing yet, as usual. Expect to see the first signs of rut activity next weekend like we most always do. It's almost like a switch has to be flipped out at our place, and it happens this week sometime.

Western Humphreys County:

Scrapes began showing up early this year (last week of September).

Over the last two weeks, an inordinate amount of buck sparring in food plots.

In the last week, older bucks really hitting the scrapes hard, even in daylight.

In the last week, yearling bucks pestering the snot out of every doe they see.

Witnessed a buck actually breed a doe yesterday afternoon in Marshall County field near the Williamson County line. First time to ever actually see that in person. Very cool. Moved to another field and a small buck chased a doe right past my truck. The youth hunters/dads also saw quite a bit of chasing over the weekend at this same location. It's on like Donkey Kong on this farm.

Stewart county one property has a few scrapes in the open ridge and I haven't been in the bottoms or thickets. 1 Mile from there has more scrapes on the ridges than I have ever seen there and rubs are showing up but the only big rubs are on traditional spots.

Young bucks are cold-trailing does in Hardeman but no pestering/chasing...they seem to simply be more curious than anything. Although they've been scraping for several weeks, this weekend I found the first big rub of the year (which is a little wierd).

We still got a good little while in my area before anything heats up.

My farm in weakley county, week ago I saw a small 8 pter checking every doe big or small that came to feed on acorns were I was hunting.

Last saturday, I checked the one spot that I usually hunt opening day of muzzle loader and found a scrap line bout a 100 yards long that had I would say 10 to 12 scraps down that trail.

Out at the edge of the beanfield there were numerous scrapes also, finally saw the larger rubs in there useual place also. I haven't seen any chasing tho.

Looks like it could be interesting this weekend.

This evening on stand I saw a spike chasing a doe around 5:30 pm

At dark when I was leaving the woods a buck cruised within 15 yards of me. It didn't act alarmed which is very unusual.

I used it in mcminn county this morning and killed a small buck that came to it. My buddy used it this evening and as his foot hit the ground a doe ran right up to it and ran past and two mature bucks came running behind her stopped to smell the estrous he couldnt get a arrow nocked by the time they got their attention on the doe again.

I cud understand 2 young bucks chasing a doe together this early but I dont understand why 2 wallhangers would chase one this early?

On my way to work I drove up on a small 3 point standing in the road. I was able to drive slowly up next to him and he didn't move. I set there and watched him and he finally walked over into the ditch. He really payed me no mind. I guess he had other things on his mind!

I had a similar experience last night in Williamson County. Had a buck walk right past me in the dark as I was putting my climbing stand together. He could care less I was standing so close.

Bucks are pounding the scrapes at my place (Humphreys County). Many new and big scrapes today that were not there 4 days ago. All of the big traditional scrapes have been openned. Lots of daylight scraping, even by older bucks. Getting pictures of young bucks chasing does along ridge-lines and through food plots.

More scrapes and rubs that I can ever remember. Bucks shoving each other around and chasing each other in fields all over the place. Moved all the cameras to scrapes / mock scrapes this weekend. I almost didn't want to because of all the cool pics in the fields.i don't think I will be disappointed though. I wish I could have moved them earlier, but my schedule restricted me. 2 1/2's and 3 1/2's were really showing up in daylight. No 4 1/2's or older in daylight. They did their usual by showing up at 7-10 pm and 12-2 am for the majority. I'm looking forward to this weekend for sure, but I sure don't like what the weather is forecasted to be \:\(

I have have seen small bucks sparring and have tons of rubs and just started seeing small and large scrapes open up. Sightings have been mainly small bucks and doe sightings have been way off. I believe this weekend will be good with the possibilities of bigger bucks on their feet. I will spend a LOT of time in the stand Saturday.

East Tn, some buck sign starting to show up with more abundance. Young bucks are spending a lot of time on their feet in daylight but the older bucks have yet to really start laying it down during daylight hours! My 11 yr old killed the 3 1/2 yr old 8pt on the juvenile just 30 mins after daylight as he was headed back in to a thick bedding area. Give it 10 more days and things will just be getting started good here I think!

I've got a couple cameras set to get the best of both situations. The cameras are pointed across food plot edge scrapes and out into the food plot. Getting great pictures of both types of activity--bucks at the scrapes, and bucks sparring and pestering does in the plots.

Seeing rubs and scrapes all over (central/south) Tennessee.More than I remember seeing last year. Have bucks sparing a little bit on cameras, but still together. Just started picking up bucks during day on my cameras also. Up until about 2 days ago was only getting them 1-3am. Think they are liking this colder weather!

Pretty much so BSK, as our peak chasing is normally the third week of Nov. Things seem to be right on target for that so far.

I guess we need to look for an increase in deer road kill and random day time activity to gauge the rut. I haven't noticed an increase in deer road kill yet.

IF you know a dispatcher at the Sheriffs office, that is a GREAT way to figure out when everything is spiking.

You and me think alike, Bryan. If you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone, why not? This is a licking branch/scrape and pointed over the corner of a food plot. Cant beat it

Williamson county. I had a 6 year old I've been trying to kill for 2 years dog a doe past me this morning at 7:30am. This is the first time I've ever seen the deer in person. No shot opportunity. This afternoon I had a great 3 year old work a scrape at 15 yards then right before dark I had another shooter work his way behind me at just 15 yards but couldn't get a shot; all I needed was two more steps on the same trail and he broke off and went directly away from me.

I've never had two shooters within bow range in one day ever until now. Heck I've never seen two shooters in one day period. I'm lucky if I get to see one all season.

I'm still not seeing any busted racks in pictures so our deer aren't rocking in rolling yet but they are close.

Awesome!!

According to BSK, Williamson County has an early rut in relation to surrounding counties. The next couple weeks is going to be awesome!

Report:

Williamson County

7:15-7:45 am

Deer everywhere taking my son to school via Old Hillsboro Rd to Hillsboro Rd to Murray Lane.

Did see one buck with wide spread charging up a hill to a pack of does off in the distance. Most of the deer were doe grazing in the fields.

Left my cameras alone for a week, over lookin scrapes in 2 different places. I had 231 pictures in the edge of the bean field, over lookin a scrap. Alot of nite action from older bucks and does and alot of day time from younger bucks and does.

Camera 2 had 69 pictures, all bucks and does checking the scrapes in this field also.

Camera 3 was in a dried old river bed, had 24 pics, turkeys, does, and small bucks walking that area.

What I took from it was they are still not quiet ready yet rut wise, getting there tho, by next week I figure to see some chasin.

Killed an 8 pointer Saturday pm in Hickman County, tarsals black, his neck and head were so swollen his eyes were nearly swollen shut. He was by himself though.
Yesterday evening in Carroll County, I watched a 6 pointer hard chasing a doe for at least 5 minutes

Just remember, bucks' necks do not "swell." The larger necks bucks have during the rut is pure muscle that develops due to the massive amount of testosterone their body's are producing right now. Basically, it's the same thing as a weight-lifter or athlete taking steroids.

Bryan, I have killed bucks with large necks and bucks with smaller necks. Any correlation with a higher number of mature larger necked bucks being killed? More testosterone and therefore more likely to be seen in daylight, hence, more killed. I have a 5 1/2 that has a "medium" neck and always has. He is completely nocturnal and is never been photographed with another deer (to my recollection). I'm thinking he possibly does not participate in the breeding process. Maybe he produces less testosterone than the average mature buck? Wondering how often this occurs? He has been a tough pill for me to swallow.

JCDEERMAN,

Neck size during the rut is highly correlated to age. The older the buck, the larger the neck. But just like anything in Nature, there will be variation from animal to animal. But neck size is one of the most accurate judgements of buck age around the rut.

Sorry, I tried to emphasize mature bucks in my original post. But we see most all mature bucks with large necks. Though him being the oldest one on camera, he has a smaller neck than ones much younger than him. And oh yea, the first thing I look at when I see a buck is his neck
