I have a 3-9x40 and prefer keeping it at 6x. To me 6x gives a me a good FOV and I can still see at longer distances.
I will drop it to 4x when in the woods.
I don't like 9x at all.
What power in your variable scope do you prefer when hunting?

Usually 5x until I need more. X2, I usually leave mine on 5X as well untill I see one way out there. Which is very rare where I hunt.

Lowest power available on my variable scopes. Where I hunt, a deer can show up within 20 yds with no warning.

I hunt 98% of the time in the thick woods and big mtns. 2-4 max.
I opt for the widest FOV I can get, and most shot are well under 50yds anyway.

3x-4x. You have time to dial up if you need to due to game being way out there. However, rarely do you have time to dial down if game is in close.

Fields= 10x that's required for the Boone&Crockett reticle. Woods= 4x for a wide field of view.

Most of my scopes are 2-7 so I set it at 2 and the others are 3-9 and I set them on 3. I only recall once having to raise the power to get a shot, but my grandaughter missed an opportunity at a deer last year because she left the scope set on 7 (after target practice) and a deer stepped out at 5 yards from the base of the tree.
Now we do almost all of our practice with teh scope set at lowest setting, except when we do the traditional shots at the 300 yard steel gong at the end of the shooting session.
