Does going to a lighter grain make that much of a difference? Using 180 grain for a 300win mag..thought about going to 150..also has anyone tried the recoil pads from limbsaver?

You can tell a small difference between the 180's and 150's but the Limbsaver will make a very noticeable difference. Limbsavers are the best thing ever made to help tame felt recoil.

You might lose a little accuracy with the 150 grain bullets too. My 300wsm was not as accurate with them, but yours might be different

The best solution for intolerable recoil is a manageable caliber

Start with a new recoil pad. If its still bad, you can get a muzzle break. When I first got my 300 win mag, I could not shoot more than 15 rds before my shoulder would turn blue. I now have a 1 inch recoil reduction pad and vias muzzle break. I went to a class this past summer and put literally a hundred and twenty rds down range in a day and there was no flinching or pain. I was shooting 190 grain bullets. It was an absolute pleasure to shoot.

Have a top quality recoil pad installed & install a mercury recoil surpressor in the stock if needed after that.
I have an older (mid 40's Belgium made Browning A-5) that thing kicked like an angry mule. I installed a pachmayr recoil pad and a mercury recoil surpressor in the butt stock. The thing shoots like a 20 ga. now.

I agree, bigger ain't always better. Get a gun you are comfortable with that you don't have to alter to tolerate.

skeet shooters do this all the time even with light load shells

Get a PAST magnum recoil shield and wear it under your shirt/jacket.
I have a 300 Mag that won't shoot 180's at all, is murder with a 150. I also have a Browning ABoltII with BOSS that has a felt recoil about like a 243, a light load 06 maybe. However, you may go deaf shooting it, the blast is kind of noticeable.
