Ive noticed many or most of my poplar and maple stumps have sprouted shoots from my select cutting about a year and a half ago,but few if any of the oak stumps.Normal? BTW,cutting was done in Aug/Sept of last year.

I'm no expert but that doesn't surprise me really...not sure about the oaks though. Poplars and Maples are such fierce growing trees that if you just stumped them and didn't treat the stumps with some sort of poison then I would fully expect an umbrella of shoots to be coming off of that stump over time. Seems like you can watch a poplar grow they grow so stinkin' fast. I know when a TWRA biologist came to my property he told me to be sure to poison the trees I cut if I didn't want any regeneration.

Depends on how much sunlight got through. Oaks tend to need more sun to get started than do poplar and maple so poplar and maple can dominate in a shaded or semi shaded environment. Course could also be that deer eat the oak regen. Lots of factors very specific to the exact location come into play.

Okay, I was assuming you didn't want regeneration out of your poplars and maples.

Nope. Deer LOVE oak stump sprouts and will eat those first.

In addition to what Smstone and BSK, large oaks don't regenerate as well as younger oaks.
