So I've decided on a Tikka but due to the weight of 6.5 lbs I'm starting to reconsider the 30 06 caliber.

Has anybody shot or owns a Tikka T3 in 30 06?

I have for a few years, id HIGHLY recomend a limbsaver recoil pad, shooting beside my ruger 30-06 the tikka recoils noticeably more compareable to my 300mag

I don't but is it wood stock or synthetic? Wood should be fine but their synthetic stocks seem like flimsy junk to me and are very light so you'd definitely feel it. I looked at them last year and was impressed by how smooth the bolt was.

if you were closer you could shoot mine... mine is the T3 lite in 30-06... I put a new recoil pad on it..... However, I do not think the recoil is bad at all. I certianly have had other guns in simular cals that have kicked worse

The problem is the eye relief with my Bushnell Elite 4200. It's 3.3" which concerns me with a light 30 06

This is your decision, but personally, I wouldn't let eye relief determine my decision.

If you have decided on the T3, get the caliber you want, and you can add a recoil pad later if necessary.

Or, it seems your best option would be to get the one with the wood stock, where recoil wouldn't be a factor.

I wouldn't change calibers to accommodate for a certain rifle. JMO

Didn't say it couldn't happen, but I really hope it don't. You seem like a really nice fella. I've seen it happen different times, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Every time I've seen it happen, it was shooter error. I would say any 30-06 that kicks back more than 3" probably wasn't being held correctly.

I haven't shot a Tikka, so I can't really speak to it from experience. Knock on wood, I haven't had it happen to me, even though I've had several magnums and have a bad habit of mounting my scopes too far back for most people.

Whatever you decide on, I wish you the best of luck. I would say go with your gut, and get what you want based on how it looks and feels to you. You can find ways to compensate for recoil if you need to. They only way to know if it is really an issue is to shoot it.

I've got the T3 lite in 300wsm with the limb saver pad. It isn't bad at all. I can shoot it all day long without a problem. A rookie can probably shoot it 3 or 4 times before the have any issues.

I have several Tikka's from 223 to ,338 the T-3 stock is sweet both the wood hunter and the lite. the 7 mag is actually the worst. I think you'll be fine, with the standard pad. I've had a Rem 700 in 30-06 the kicked more than the 338.
