Depends on the strain of tilapia you have. Some will start getting lethargic and "net catchable" at 62-65degrees. Others can tolerate it much better, but once you get below 55, most will be gone.

Whoever sold your buddy those fish should be kicked in the rear. Very poor management advice, not the tilapia, but the person who sold'em to him.

An internet article today states that tilapia from China are now being raised on pig manure.

Sound appetizing?

Really I just prefer not knowing where they come from. They taste good. I mean catfish eat the same or worse stuff. I'll eat them any day everyday.

So I went out to my friend's pond in Hardeman County on Saturday morning. It was COLD outside, but of course the weather has been pretty warm all the way up until Friday, so I thought I had picked a decent time. We got some cold rain, which I assumed would have "shocked" the lake and helped push the water temps down.

I have no idea what the actual water temperature was (didn't bring a thermometer), but I saw zero tilapia - swimming or dead.

I guess that means that they either already died and were eaten, or were still toughing it out at the deep end of the lake and avoiding the shallows.

What do you guys think? Is it worth driving an hour and 20 minutes back out there to check again, or give it up as a lost cause? After this week of cool weather, I think there's probably almost no chance of them making it through the next weekend.

I agree - I couldn't believe that he had no idea about that.

But it makes me wonder how cheaply he came by them. Given that they are a popular food fish, I can't imagine that the tilapia option was more economically favorable than a bunch of fathead minnows or something.

^^I personally like tilapia for ponds. More and more, there is a larger market for tilapia from a pond management stance than a "eating fish".
They reproduce rapidly and quickly after stocking, the fry will offer excellent forage for largemouth bass and even bluegills, and they will take some pressure off the bluegill pop if your bass have been taking a toll on'em, they can also keep aquatic plants under control, they are a great addition to those looking for something different in their ponds (ie..fishing opportunities)Plus, although they are a non-native/exotic species, the intolerance to cold temps makes them a very viable option for pond management. Also, they can get very large in the course of a summer. I have seen 1/4lb fish reach 3 lbs in <4 months.
