I have read several posts about the 45/70 smokeless conversion....not to sound like an idiot. Could someone explain the conversion to me? I am very interested in doing this. Thanks

I've been considering this for a while. The appeal to me is a shorter lighter rifle, the ability to shoot 40 cal bullets with a sabot and 45 cal bullets sabotless. I like yours a lot Rubberduck but I already have a thumbhole Savage so I think I'd like the Ultra Hunter style stock but they aren't sold that way. What was your total cost getting the rig set up minus the scope set up?

I have been eyeballin' the H&R Buffalo Classic to have one converted. I love me the looks of those old style rifles.

Man nick that's sweet we need to get together and shoot sometime Name the time and place and I'm there! I've got to get the stuff together to get my Savage put together.
what type of breech plug is it? what is the cost to do something like that? It's SMI's plug. Shorter than a Savage style plug but still has a ventliner. It's $165 for the plug install and return shipping.
I like yours a lot Rubberduck but I already have a thumbhole Savage so I think I'd like the Ultra Hunter style stock but they aren't sold that way. What was your total cost getting the rig set up minus the scope set up? Gun was $400ish and the plug install was $165. A non-stainless H&R 45-70 is $250ish.
Keep in mind that a short, light rifle is a handful with 62 grs. of powder in it

another option is to buy a savage breech plug yourself ( about $40), then you send your barrel and the breech plug to a guy named slufoot in NC. He will do the conversion and ship it back to you for $80 in about 2 weeks! I almost did this with an H&R stainless ultra hunter, but the gun sold before I pulled the trigger.
I can't remember for sure, but I think slufoot is a member at doug's message boards, and he was very fast to respond to my questions when I was thinking about it.
Just Google "slufoot 45-70 conversion" and you will find him. He is a lot cheaper and faster than smi.

He can also fit it for and provide a ram rod for extra money, but I was going to buy a collapsible ram rod that you wear on your belt.

If I were to do it again I think I would have Slufoot do mine. It really only saves you about $25 going with his style though. $40 for the plug, $80 for the install and $20ish for return shipping. So you're looking at $140 for Slufoot versus $165 for SMI.
The only advantage I would say the SMI conversion has is the breech plug is shorter so you get more use of your barrel length. Probly not enough to make a difference though...

Slu-foot is a member of Dougs and his work is outstanding and much faster turn around time than SMI and less hassel.

I purchased the stainless H&R off here a month or so back. I sold the factory laminate thumbhole stock and forend because it was right handed and Im a lefty. Ordered a Boyde Thumbhole Laminate left hand camobutt stock and a laminate camo forend from H&R for an Ultra slug Hunter. Next stop is sending the barrel and forend to slufoot for the breech plug and ramrod install.

Customer service at SMI leaves alot to be desired. True that. But I prefer their short plug over the long Savage plug.

Pawn shops if you want a blued one. For a Stainless you'll have to order it from Bud's gun shop or your local dealer can order them.

I've heard that the ultra hunters are more accurate.

I've heard that the ultra hunters are more accurate. Nope. Only advantage they have is a slightly longer barrel. And even thats not enough to make a noticeable difference in velocity.
Its all about finding what your gun likes. Every build is different.
