This thread made me think back to one of the stupidest things I ever did. When I was 14, I packed lumber, hammer, and nails into the woods a couple miles from my house. When I was finished building my "stand," I was positioned on three small boards 28 FEET (measured) above ground. No safety rails (no one knew what a safety harness was then), just a couple of limbs to grab onto if I lost my balance.

Worst part is, no one knew where I was hunting. No one. If I had fell out of that tree, it would have been many hours before anyone found me.

I used to make them when I was a little kid.... its been a while, but from memory, they will last a while and then rot and get real loose, and the boards might split. I think they will be ok for this season only. 4 nails per board, 3.5" galvanized nails, should hold for the rest of deer season. I will just keep checking everything on the stand each time I hunt up there, and bring a safety harness, and when the season is over, will remove the bottom rungs and leave the stand up for the memories....

Thats the sketchiest looking piece I have ever seen. No offense, but that looks like a mess of carpentry. I hope you listen to these guys, esp ^^^ for pointing out that kids could find this crap and climb up it.

good point, it's in an area where kids could find it, but they would have to look hard to find it. still not sure if I'd want to take the chance now that I think of it. Once I can get a regular stand up, then I can take off the bottom rungs.

Taking bottom rungs off won't keep 10-12yr old boys out of it. Take the time to take it all the way down. Young boys will find a way to shimmy up to it.

No offense, but we were all young once, and most all of us built death traps like that only to learn better later. A good ladder stand or even a hang-on stand (not a big fan of hang-on stands) is a far better investment. You build something like what you have for $20 and it lasts a year or two, while a good factory built ladder at $100 will last you for many, many years.

When I was about 20, I fell out of a homemade stand that was not close to being 50 ft high. A 2x4 step pulled off of the tree. I dislocated my shoulder and was spitting up blood. We went straight to hospital and I have not even considered climbing into another homemade stand.
