My friend has offered to sell me his slightly used rifle, and I've been wanting to get into deer hunting for a while now. Is this a quality rifle? Has anyone had good or bad experiences with it?
Thanks, Jason

Great shooting rifles, even the cheaper ones. The later vanguards (S2) tend to be more expensive. What color is the stock? Can you open the bolt without putting the safety on fire? It really depends on price as to whether it's a good deal, but these are usually good shooters.

I think it's just a black synthetic stock. Haven't seen the gun yet, but he's bringing it by my house soon. I'll be sure to check the action, too. Will it be good or bad if I can open the bolt without putting the safety on fire? He's thinking in the $300 range.
In case my last question didn't give it away, this will be my first rifle.

Walmart had a series of vanguards that you couldn't open the bolt unless you put the safety on fire. They didn't seem to be put together as well as the others I saw. They had a tan web stock. They were awesome shooters, just cheaper and didn't feel as sturdy.
This one likely has the action made by Howa. They usually have a very smooth action and shoot great. Either way, I would say it's well worth the money in good condition.

Not yet, BigD. I'm looking at this as a potential Christmas gift, so neither of us are in any hurry.

The advantage of a Howa with the 2 position safety is that you can work the bolt to load or unload ammunition with out the trigger being engaged. Put the safety ON and gun will not fire when working the bolt. The disadvantage is that the bolt on a smooth action Howa may move up when hitting your clothing or other objects. I had this happen frequently one Howa that I had. It was aggrivating to alway have to check to be shur the bolt was completely closed. It is my understanding that the newer Howa action has a 3 position safety. Safety all the way to rear locks trigger and action and you can not work the bolt or fire the gun. Middle position permits the bolt to open but trigger is locked and will not fire. Forward position permits trigger to fire the rifle and bolt can be operated. All of the Howas that I have fired were accurate and actions were very smooth and functioned perfectly. I have shorter arms and the synthetic Howa stocks are much too long for me. My son is 6'4" and loves the Howa stocks. If the rifle is in good shape, you can resell easily at that price range if you are not pleased with the gun.
