I really like my dad's Browning x-bolt in .338 WM. The felt recoil on it is very little difference from my Rem 700 .270 Win. I would look hard at one of these if I was shopping in that price range, but that is only because it really seemed to fit me that well.

For the money you are wanting to spend I would shy away from the savage. Much better options out there in your price range in my opinion.

Great choice in model. How hard would it be to find a Model 7 in 30-06, I wonder? I thought they were short action only.

There was a rem Mountain rifle in the classifieds, I would start there and move to a 4x12 Zeiss from Cameraland NY....

I recommend a Tikka T3 in one of the WSM with a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 with Ballistic Plex Reticle. Mine is a 300 WSM and it is a tack driver. The ballistic plex reticle will allow you to shoot much farther than a regular reticle scope once you practice.

I still have the Tikka T3 30-06 that I listed for my Dad in the classifieds. Synthetic stock with blued barrel unfired. It would be mine if it was a lefty

If you like Savage, I think these look awesome. I have been eyeing one in 7mm08 5.5# box magazine, and in comes in -06.

I looked at these last year when buying a .270 and ended up just going with the model 70 stainless and composite stock. Just couldn't justify the additional cost between the two although the extreme weather was sweet.

The other one I was looking at was the Ruger Hawkeye. I really liked it too but am partial to the model 70's and went that route.

As for scopes I put a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 on it. Gotta get to the range and dial her in soon.
