I have some hints / tips for anyone trying to clean an old military rifle.

I use kerosene (on the metal parts), it "melts" the cosmoline.

And helps resist rust I believe. Better than water anyway. ;\)

One of those hand held steam cleaners worked for me on a mosin I cleaned up. The steam weakened it and blasted it away.

I used to use brake cleaner but you have to hose it down immediately with wd40 afterwords.

Be careful using WD (watered down) 40. It contains water and WILL cause your firearms to rust. I have seen actions rusted shut from WD40.
