Im going to purchase a rifle soon and want to be about $1K-1.2K all in with scope.
Looking at a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 for the scope.
So what would be a quality rifle in the $600-$800 range that would be accurate and reliable.
The caliber will .30 06'

In a brand new rifle, I would go with the Ruger M77 Hawkeye (blue and wood) or the Winchester model 70 (CRF).
In a used gun, I would buy the Remington 700 BDL rodeojoe had in the classifieds. It was nice and well under your budget.

There are many but I would recommend that you actually handle the ones you like and go from there. Pick them up and shoulder them and see how they feel and fit you. I have some quality rifles, one for example is a Sako M995 7 MAG. It is a quality rifle with a accuracy guarantee, but it doesn't fit me and it has a long barrel and I just don't like shooting it. It sits in the gun safe. Hope this may help in your decision.

Bought a browning A-Bolt Medallion in .270 when I graduated college I love it. For me I wanted a wood stock and it came down to the Browing or the Remmy. I chose the Browning and I am very happy with it.

All you need is a Ruger model 1. The stainless with gray laminate is pretty sweet looking. The ones i have shoot excellent.

I really like my dad's Browning x-bolt in .338 WM. The felt recoil on it is very little difference from my Rem 700 .270 Win. I would look hard at one of these if I was shopping in that price range, but that is only because it really seemed to fit me that well.

For the money you are wanting to spend I would shy away from the savage. Much better options out there in your price range in my opinion.

Great choice in model. How hard would it be to find a Model 7 in 30-06, I wonder? I thought they were short action only.

I recommend a Tikka T3 in one of the WSM with a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 with Ballistic Plex Reticle. Mine is a 300 WSM and it is a tack driver. The ballistic plex reticle will allow you to shoot much farther than a regular reticle scope once you practice.

Look at the model 70 extreme weather SS with fluted barrel I looked at these last year when buying a .270 and ended up just going with the model 70 stainless and composite stock. Just couldn't justify the additional cost between the two although the extreme weather was sweet.
The other one I was looking at was the Ruger Hawkeye. I really liked it too but am partial to the model 70's and went that route.
As for scopes I put a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 on it. Gotta get to the range and dial her in soon.

Not a bad choice. Jump on one now if you can. The prices are going up. The rifles that were selling for $400 4 to 5 years ago are now worth more. They are one rifle Brand that has actually increased in value over the past 8 or so years. I love the Hunter version. I cannot stand the plastic stocked Tikka's. You may also want to go and hold one and shoulder it. I do not like that the bolt locks when the safety is on. Other than that, I love mine.
Other rifles I would take a gander at would be a CZ , Browning Abolt, Ruger Hawkeye, Winchester Model 70, and Howa. The CZ would be at the top of my list with the Winchester Model 70 in second.

I have a bunch of different bolt guns: 2 Sakos (.222, .243) 2 Kimbers(270WSM, 308) 2 model 70s(264 WinMag, 30-06) and a Ruger Hawkeye in .358 Win.
You couldn't talk me out of any of them, and I would recommend any of them.

Several good choices have been mentioned. My recommendation would be the Ruger Hawkeye in .308-30/06 if you must. It is the best otc 'real rifle' currently manufactured IMO. My next choice would be a M70 I reckon. The Tikkas are nice, smoothe, and accurate but have a bit too much plastic for a classic rifle. PH

tikka t3 is an excellent rifle but in a 30-06 go with the hunter (wood} stock the recoil with the synthetic stock is significantly worse borderline unbearable and i shoot some of the big 375's

I would get the tika with the wood stock, I own a synthetic t3 lite and it's a tack driver however my next will be a wood stock, they don't feel cheap.

Ruger #1, Winchester Model 70, Ruger 77, Remington 700 (pre 1985) new Remingtons are nowhere near the quality, or an older Remington 760/7600.
But if you want real class, get an 1895 Winchester 30-06. Fit it with a good peep sight.
Why be like everyone else and tote a bolt rifle with a scope.

One good thing about the tikka T3, if you ever get tired of that plastic stock, Stockys Gun Stock has a Bell&Carlson Medalist Stock/ full length Aluminum bedding for 219 dollars.

the Tikka barrels are made on the same equipment as the Sako and I have yet to shoot a bad Sako,,
Tikka is making a 308 Tactical rifle in 308 that has my interests up considerably.

Yep, that was me on the first bench. I ended up shooting 20 rounds total. I did the whole "break in" the barrel process. I would shoot a group of 3 and then clean with Hoppes and a copper solvent then brush. Did this for 5 sets of 3 rounds. Good luck with muzzleloader. I got my CVA sighted in last week.
