I shot last weekend and got a 3" or so at 100-yds... After cleaning the gun, I took it back out yesterday & the first shot was 6" high & 4" to the left....
Is that expected? I took the next shot without cleaning & the bullet was closer, but it was high to the right...
I am Shooting a CVA optima SS... 245 Aerotip powerbelts & 2-50gr 777 pellets....
I did not swab between shots.... I didnt adjust the scope yesterday because it was perfect last week...
My third shot was not much better... I just put it up & went home... I didnt want to waste a bunch of supplies without knowing what I'm working with....

Yes it is. First shot on clean barrel is almost always outside the group. That is why when shooting BP subs I like Blackhorn 209. No cleanup really needed and it doesn't build up as much. So if you do spit patch between shots you can keep it that way and be fine for hunting. With that said I wouldn't go all season without cleaning. I wouldn't want you to rust your barrel.
Powerbelts and pellets...I would not choose that route personally. I like to measure my powder to shrink the group size. Can't do that with a solid chunk of powder. Then you have Powerbelts. The are smaller than the bore that is why they have a plastic base to seal them. How accurate can something be if it's rattling down the bore when you shoot? Just my opinion and I'm sure someone on this board can shoot 35 shots into one hole at 250 yards with that combo.
If you really want to see what your gun can do get some Blackhorn 209 and some 250 or 300 gr Shockwave bullets. Try 90, 100, and 110 gr of powder. There is a mod to the breach plug for the guns that don't have a recess. If your plug is not recessed PM me and I'll send you a link.

I will not go in the woods with a dirty barrel! Powerbelt bullets are the only bullet that will not group with a clean barrel in my gun. All other sabot bullets group fine with clean barrel for me. I shoot 150gr pyrodex pellets with a 250gr shockwave bullet with great results. If you could go back a couple of years on here and see all the bad luck people had with powerbelts, I bet you would rethink using them.

I couldn't get powerbelts aerotips to group at all in my CVAs, both of them. Changed to the hollow point. Grouped much better.

Sounds like your gun likes a fouled barrel. I have had them both ways, a Knight that would shoot the same, fouled or clean, and a CVA that likes a fouled better for tighter grouping.

Mine likes a dirty barrel. I usually give it a good cleaning after a day of shooting. So before hunting I will usually shoot 2 or 3 of the 209 primers and I am good to go.
Never really measured my groups at 100 yards but I know they are all close to each other and it is consistant.
Good luck,
JP

Gonna hit the range tomorrow evening.. I guess i got lucky cause I have a bud who is getting out of muzzleloading... From him, I have acquired 30 Tc shockwave bullets, 50-100 grain shots of 777 pellets & 200 primers.....I may launch a few of the shockwaves and see what happens....

Ask him how old the powder is. 777 will loose it's potency after a year and lot of it in two or three. Expect loss of about 50 fps in 1 year and 100 fps in two and 200 in three years. That is why when you go buy powder make sure it's new stock to get both current formulation and best speed you can get. Not saying it won't be accurate but there is a chance it may not be too.

I clean after every shot can't stand a dirty barrel. I zero with a clean barrel as the first shot is the important one.
