My wife wants me to plant a couple of muscadine vines. I read a bit and I think I've decided I'm going to sink 3 cedar posts and run 2 strands of wire across the distance and plant the vines between the posts. Leaning toward the Nesbitt variety.

Anyone have these?
Tips for planting? When to plant?

Here's a great simple overview I used to get started with them.

http://www.isons.com/pdf/developing_pruning_muscadine_vine.pdf

Fall is the best time to set out new vines.

Ison's Nursery http://www.isons.com is a great place to get vine stock. They also have lots of free info on their website about muscadines.

Make sure you put a protective cage of chicken wire around the base of your vines or the rabbits will eat them. I learned that lesson the hard way.

The best time to transplant them is late fall or winter when they are dormant, just like trees.

it doesnt matter what trellis you use. I run 3 lines, some use two. You want them head level for picking. they make great jelly and wine!

I just planted 10 muscadines in a fenced in area, do you think I will have problems with coons or birds eating them?
