Going to put out a small trot line this week. Never done one before and was wondering what bait is recommended?

Hope to catch enough cats for dinner while camping out.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't using game fish for bait illegal?

I use little minnows or other live bait fish. Yellow cats love the live bait! Turkey livers work good but sometimes come off easy, this can be remedied with a little pantyhose. Worms work sometimes. It just depends on what they feel like eating. Good luck.

I think your wrong..

A licensed sport angler (with all required licenses, and permits) can harvest game fish (including rainbow trout and sunfish) for use as bait from the wild using legal sport fishing methods. When harvesting game fish, all restrictions in the sport fishing proclamation apply (including creel and length limits, seasons, and license requirements).

yes and this means you can't use a net to catch the bluegills. I didn't know that a couple years back, thought it was fine to keep the gills that showed up in my cast net. Not like the warden is going to go berserk on you for a little bluegill, but it's good to know the little rules like that too

You cant use panty hose on livers legaly, If a fish hits the bait and you lose him, he's good as dead. Go down to the bait shop and buy the biggest minnows they have, keep them alive.

Use small hooks and bait if You want small fish. I prefer to eat cats over 20#. I use 8/0 to 12/0 hooks and big baits. I have had 30 and 40# cats swallow 5 & 6# fish I had already hooked. Any fish caught legally and of legal size is legal bait. Hard for me not to eat a 14" or 16" bass though. I once caught a 40# flat on a 4/0 hook and by some mericle got mim in the boat. When I pulled him up I could see the hook was hooked behind the lower lip and had not penetrated. As soon as he hit the floor of the boat the hook came out.

Could you point me towards the regulation that makes the pantyhose part illegal?
