Weighty memento: war veteran's secret revealed after his death
The family of a war hero only discovered the full weight of his bravery after his death when his cremation left behind a huge pile of shrapnel.

Ronald Brown stepped on a land mine while on a mission in France in August 1944.
The blast peppered his left leg with red-hot fragments and he was forced to crawl two miles to safety.
But because of medical conditions of the day it was thought safer to leave shrapnel in his body.
He survived the war but only ever told his family the basic story and said the accident had left him with a 'bad knee'.
Mr Brown told loved ones he still had a 'bullet' in his leg and asked his grandchildren not to sit on his knee because of the pain it caused.

But when he died last week aged 94 his family had him cremated and were stunned when staff handed them back a big bag of shrapnel.
The bag contained a whopping 6oz of bomb shrapnel that he had been carrying around for 60 years.
Daughter Jane Madden, 55, of Exeter, Devon said her father told her there was a bullet in his knee from the war, never mentioning the pile of fragments.
She said: "I don't think he ever realised all that was in his leg - it weighed about six ounces.
"He'd said there was a bullet in his leg but I was imagining one romantic piece of metal.
"But when we went to scatter his ashes we asked whether the bullet had been found and they gave us this bag full of metal.

It wasn't being disrespectful. Photos we see on the internet are not always true...

I doubt the photo with the story is the actual shrapnel from his body. If nothing else, the heat from his cremation would have altered how it looked.

Only 29 guys came home out of a 900 man regiment. It's always good to be lucky.

Before they did the cremation on my BIL they ask if there was any metal in his body. One thing I find strange with this story is they run the bones thru a crusher once they cut off the flame. It reduces anything left to course sand consist, any metal like in the picture wouldn't be in great shape once thru the bone crusher.

What unit was he in? I am not seeing it in the story.

From the linked story:

"...Mr Brown, of Exeter, joined the East Yorkshire Regiment at the age of 21 and was a quartermaster when he suffered his injury...."

Some of those screws probably came from the casket he was cremated in.

I don't think people are cremated in caskets. Just them and the burners

Crappie Luck is correct on this. They may transport the body in a cardboard box but remove them before creamation. We did what was called direct cremation on my BIL. No embalming just pick up from the place of death and transport to the crematory. My fishing buddy they went the entire route with embalming and showing at the funeral home in a regular casket but didn't burn the casket....Believe it or not they rent caskets for such occasions. Just return them to the funeral home, clean them up and use them the next time.
Reason I know this was I was in charge of taking care of my BIL's passing and called several funeral homes on prices and how things would work out.

The main reason most choose creamation its cheaper, than the cost of casket and burial plot and headstone$$$$$$.

That could change though, if Obama were re-elected. The casket makers union could have him impose some regulations on the smoke going out the chimmeys of the crematories, that would therefore make Caskets cheaper than creamations \:\)

True story.

When dad died, we had him cremated per his wishes. This was not long after the cremation debacle that took place in Georgia ("cremated" people showing up in farm ponds, etc) so I grilled the owner of the crematory pretty hard to ensure everything was on the up and up.

They had just opened a new crematory on the west side of the city (THE city, Chicago) much to the dismay of the area's residents. Neighbors had been complaining about the smoke and odors, even before the crematory was finished and put into operation. After about the 10th call the crematory owners invited the local CFD fire captain, the local alderman, and a couple of news types.

They were given a good tour of the crematory, and at the end of the tour the alderman wanted to know what was different when they were actually doing a cremation. The owner told them, we were cremating a body during the tour - you didn't notice?

Needless to say, further complaints were ignored by the powers that be. \:D
