I have shot the 180 gr sst out to 1000 yards with good results. If your not going to shoot over 600 or 700 yards the 165 will work just fine. My barrel is a 10 twist.

Unless you special ordered a barreled action from Legacy Sports (Howa) your barrel is a 12 twist. You should see good accuracy in either of the weights you asked about. I would especially recommend the Hornady 150 sst customs. Not the superperformance, most howas I know of didn't like the speed of them and groups greatly opened up. The Hornady 165 BTSP customs should also result in great groups. Both the factory loads I mentioned have produced under 3/4 moa at 100yds in 4 different howa 1500s with the 12 twist that I know of. They also produced very exceptional groups out of my Howa, 1500 24" hvy brl with 10 twist. However mine is mostly set up for target shooting with the B&C tactical/varmint medalist stock it absolutely loves the 178 A-Max over 44.2 gr Varget. Considering getting another more specifically as a hunting set up. The Howa is money well spent.

I recently bought a savage 308 and started hand loading. I don't think you'll have an issue with either weight. I had an issue of bullets. I wanted to shoot the hornady sst 165 grains but my gun jut would not shoot them. I switched to sierra game king in 165 and I'm pleased. I just wonder how they perform on deer.

In the woods or under 200 yards either will work equally well. In the open out past 200 the 165 or better yet the 168 grain beats the 150 in every way.

We started with 150 gr NBT and never had reason to try anything else.
