I recently got ride of my 270 and got a 308 in return (howa1500) and was trying to decide on shells.

while i am gonna start with some Hornady SST rounds i was more wondering about gains and what most seem to like out of a 308?

I have some 150grains to start with but wondered what others opinions or experience with 165grains is??

I am a heavy bullet kind of guy. Usually you get better long range accuracy and trajectory out of a longer, heavier bullet, as well as penetration. I use 165 Hornady SPs in my 30-06 with good accuracy, but haven't taken a deer with them yet.

I run 150 through my sons Model 7, I like them well.

I use 168 in my 30-06, and they do great.

I don't think you are gonna make a bad choice with either.

Never had a complaint with the 150s. Then again, I wasn't shooting over 100 yards either while deer hunting.

I used to hunt with a .308 and have killed deer with both the 150 and 165 grain bullets. I had better luck with the 150 grain bullets with better expansion.

I had a Howa 1500 that loved the 150s. I even had a buddy load up some 130gr hollow points. They were punching the same hold at 50 yards. I didn't have enough loaded to try 100 yards.

I've loaded a 150 gr. Hornady Interlocks since '95, behind 48 gr. 748 and CCI 200 primer. I've killed at least 15 deer with this load and its done good on expansion. I shot 168 gr. Sierra Matchkings and 168 gr. hollow points made by a late friend that he swaged with corbin dies. I got great accuracy out of the Sierras and really good out of the Corbins. I've never hunted with anything but 150 gr. though. I would think either weight would be accurate in your rifle.

Whichever one shoots best out of your gun is the one to use. That being said I have had good luck with 165s.

I have 3 308s and none of them are finnicky. They shoot whatever I choose good...Use your personal preference. I do like a heavier bullet.

I have shot the 180 gr sst out to 1000 yards with good results. If your not going to shoot over 600 or 700 yards the 165 will work just fine. My barrel is a 10 twist.

Unless you special ordered a barreled action from Legacy Sports (Howa) your barrel is a 12 twist. You should see good accuracy in either of the weights you asked about. I would especially recommend the Hornady 150 sst customs. Not the superperformance, most howas I know of didn't like the speed of them and groups greatly opened up. The Hornady 165 BTSP customs should also result in great groups. Both the factory loads I mentioned have produced under 3/4 moa at 100yds in 4 different howa 1500s with the 12 twist that I know of. They also produced very exceptional groups out of my Howa, 1500 24" hvy brl with 10 twist. However mine is mostly set up for target shooting with the B&C tactical/varmint medalist stock it absolutely loves the 178 A-Max over 44.2 gr Varget. Considering getting another more specifically as a hunting set up. The Howa is money well spent.

I recently bought a savage 308 and started hand loading. I don't think you'll have an issue with either weight. I had an issue of bullets. I wanted to shoot the hornady sst 165 grains but my gun jut would not shoot them. I switched to sierra game king in 165 and I'm pleased. I just wonder how they perform on deer.

In the woods or under 200 yards either will work equally well. In the open out past 200 the 165 or better yet the 168 grain beats the 150 in every way.

We started with 150 gr NBT and never had reason to try anything else.
