I just purchased a Thompson Center Impact and am debating what type of load to go with. For those with experience with either or both, do you prefer to use black powder or Pyrodex pellets?

Do yourself a big favor from the get-go:

Go with Blackhorn 209 Powder (only available in powder).
Buy regular Federal 209 shotgun primers to ignite it (not those "muzzleloader" 209 primers).

You will get much better accuracy and have a much easier time keeping your muzzleloader clean.

I have used the pyrodex for years and years, got some pellets and really like the simplicity of them.. never noticed any accuracy or firing difference..

Blackhorn 209 powder was specifically made to be used with regular shotgun primers. That's all I know, other than it doesn't ignite consistently with "muzzleloader" primers.

The main reason I'm recommending the Blackhorn 209 is because it is so much "cleaner", i.e. you don't have to clean your barrel between shots, and clean-up after a day at the range is quick and easy. It's a side benefit that it is also more accurate than anything else you might consider.

i shot pellets for years and got decent results, it was much easier to keep up with and load.....

HOWEVER

Switched to BH209 this year and found it to be much less fickle and much more consistent. Wont be going back.

While i know the OP was loose vs Pellets i will say i had issues with the pellets breaking while loading which was causing some of the inconsistencies.

pellets are for lazy dummys. good choice on bh209 just don't use ml 209 primers or you will have misfire , use shotgun primer. use gun cleaner to clean it. no water at all.

Good advice. Federal or CCI Mag primers are the best choices for BH 209.

I know lots of guys do but, I've never used the pellets. I've used Pyrodex RS, Goex 2F and Hodgdon Triple 7. I just like the loose powder.

Never used a pellet other than in BB guns. I use Goex FFF black powder in most of my guns and Goex FF in my .54s and .58.

Used pyrodex then triple 7 and bh209. Bh209 is worth the extra cost.

Had good luck with cci and federal primers.

I must be lucky. I can shoot either pyrodex or triple 7 and not clean my gun between shots and nothing changes. I will say that using pyrodex the third shot is a bear getting down. But it still shoots accurate. Haven't tried bh209 and probably won't in my gun. As far as pellets or loose powder. I prefer loose powder. If a pellet breaks all consistency is gone. And I've seen how hard I pack mine and I'm sure I'll crush them.

My Cva wolf is very accurate with 777 pellets. I was going to switch to BH like so many have. But I got a whole box of pellets for christmas last year so I'll finish that box off first. Which will take a couple years

I can't use pellets of any kind in my White--777 its the only thing I can use to get a good group.

You'll have to bear with me here as I'm a side lock shooter, but i can't really see any advantage to pellets over loose powder, other than speed of reloading. With pellets you're limited to either 50, 100 or 150gn charges. What if your particular gun, like mine, prefers 75, 80 or 90 grains? Surely when you only have 1 shot to make count, accuracy should be way more important than speed of reloading?

I like pellets for the convenience. Call me lazy if you want but my Optima shoots great with 2 777 pellets. I don't see any need to me to have to measure and worry about spilling and everything. If I wasn't happy with the performance of my gun then I probably would but as of now I'm fine.

use speed loaders or powder tubes. Less cost per shot, blackhorn209 doesnt suck up moisture like pellets, dont have to worry about pellets cracking and causing a spike in pressure. BH209, if someone were to write a new bible, blackhorn209 would be in it.
