I recently discovered a company called Dynamic Research Technologies that specializes in frangible ammunition. Their bullet is designed to drop an animal quicker and more efficiently. Is this type of ammunition legal to hunt big game with in Tennessee? Also if it is not legal then I plan on using Hornady VMax. If anyone has any experience with those, please share.

The only ammunitions that are illegal in TN are exploding and full metal jacketed ammo.
If the DRT frangible is a full metal jacketed ammo it would not be legal.

I agree with Mike243, the V-max bullets are varmint bullets and not meant for big game. Not a very good choise at all for deer size critters as they would "probably" not penetrate to the vitals. Not sure about the other bullets you talk about, maybe do a little research on them before you decide. IMO any ammo that says "frangible" is probably not a big game bullet and meant for varmints only.

You don't want bullet fragments in the meat, there's better choices out there

I really appreciate all of the information and feedback. I bought the Hornady mainly because a relative of mine works at Benton Shooters and recommended them. I considered the Razorback rounds by Winchester but couldn't find any. I'd appreciate if anyone could suggest something they've used. Also I was curious about the frangible ammo because I read an article where this woman dropped a pretty large buck with it.

I always stick with a "known" big game bullet and picked the one that fit my pocketbook, was accurate in my rifles and performed well on the game I was after. For me the Hornady Interlocks fit the bill. In some of my rfles the Hornady SST's work best. No one bullet will shoot the best out of all rifles. My Rem Mdl. 7 likes Nosler ballistic tips better than any Hornady bullet I tried. Nosler and many other makers make great game bullets, but I can get twice the amount of bullets with Hornady than say Nosler for the same amount of money. This is what makes reloading challenging and fun, trying different brands and choosing the one that performs the best in that particular rifle. Deer size critters are relativly easy to kill with a well placed "game" bullet. I'm not saying that a "frangible" bullet can't and won't kill a deer, sometimes they perform remarkably well, other times they are terrible. I've seen it happen and it's not worth it.

DoubleTap, My experience has been with a 55gr Accelerator out of a 30-06, I imagine the performance would be similar to the Vmax...The Accelerator pretty much blew up on impact and did not penetrate deeply, took off a patch of hide about 4" in diameter and ruined allot of meat. If it were not for a very lucky spine hit (I was shooting from the uphill side at around 300yds), the deer would have possibly have been lost. When I got to the deer, it was very much a live. Before anyone asks, I was 14yrs old and the round used was an "experiment" as the Accelerators had recently hit the market (to my knowledge), and not part of our normal hunting kit.
