Last year I planted winter wheat behind my house just to give the deer something to eat and to see if I could do it. I did so again this year and added in some oats but sprayed it beforehand to kill everything first. Never been known as a green thumb but I think it's coming up better this year. Only problem is I can't see it from the house because of a treeline so other than the tracks I normally don't see the deer. Don't intend to hunt over it unless my son wants to shoot one back there and then I might let him but prefer not to.

Looks great, your son may find pride in killing one back there that you may not. It would be something he can show " momma" immediately that is a provider. It's fun having plots at the house.
