Anyone have any experience with these? While I was home on vacation in August I kept hearing what sounded like a squirrel scraping its teeth on a nut, but it was coming from one of my pines in the corner of my yard, and I never saw anything. Once I got to thinking about it, the tree didn't look as healthy as the other pines. Do these beetles make enough noise that maybe that was what I was hearing? If so, what can I do to keep my other trees safe, if anything?

Yes, you can hear some types if it is very quiet and you are close to them. Look for sap on the trunk that looks like popcorn.
There are several types of boring beetles, some pesticides are available, but the best control is the weather.

Even if it's a big stand of mature pines those rascals can make alot of it unmerchantable in an unbelievably short time. Pine timber isn't bringing a great return right now, but a little something is better than nothing.
I certainly hope you don't have to, but removing those individual trees may have to be an alternative to save the remainder.
