I messed around and wound up with a sporter weight 17 HMR barrel for the CZ455 Varmint,,it looks funny with the light barrel in the varmint stock but with the 4.5-14 LR/T M1 scope and a 100 yard zero the 17 gr VMax bullet is only 3/8ths an inch high at 65 yards and 1 inch low at 125.

I may get up Saturday morning and give it a try,,I havent been all year yet..anybody use the HMR on squirrels,,I have the 17M2 but havent ever hunted with the Magnum,,we will see I guess,,I bet it makes a mess.

My dad told me if I shot another squirrel with a .17 HMR, he would never clean another one for me. Everyone I shot anywhere but the head either blew apart when I shot it or ripped apart when we cleaned them.

head & neck shots,I have shot them thru the ribs & not lost any meat but can make skinning a challenge ,also being able to killem from a really long ways makes it hard to shoot & keep track of more than 1 at a time,I hate losing 1 after seeing it fall.

+1

I used an HMR for a couple years. Loved it because of the accuracy and range. The round will explode a squirrel if you hit the body. I went back to the 22 because of the price of ammo.

I've killed a few that were getting in above my bonus room through a vent. Not a pretty sight shooting them through the body.
