I would at least put some 4" lag screws where the 2x4's and 2x6's tie to the tree and put a few 3" screws at every one of the places those boards are nailed. That should keep you off the ground through the season. Please pull out your screw in steps at the end of the season and don't even think about getting back in that stand next year. Good luck with it.

I guess it could of been a flaw in the construction or the wood rotting. I used decking screws to secure the seat to the base.

I failed to check it before getting into it one morning and the seat portion broke as soon as I sat down. BTW - I am only 136 lbs so don't get fooled like I did when it comes to your weight.

I wish you continued good luck - sounds like you have already scored twice out of your setup.

I agree with everyone else. When I was young, I would build these as well. Not anymore. Take these guys up on the offer. Get a ladder or a climber. This stand may work for you this year, but next year, as the tree grows the nails will pull out and weaken.

You will fall out of that stand if you aren't careful. Please get a better stand and wear a safety harness.

Remember the quote. 1 out of 4 deer hunters will have a tree-stand accident in their lifetime. Thats too close odds for me. I wear a safety harness anytime I'm off the ground. Period.

great point bigtex, the wind will play havoc on wood stands. most of us wouldnt think about checking it before daylight. after a long week and being excited about hunting a good spot on our day off . even though maybe high winds or storms have moved through earlier in the week. i agree if building a wood stand its best to build a ladder type . which i have and is my number one spot, its been up for about three years and is still strong but each season i check it over top to bottom and replace anything that might be or even look unsafe.. even though its still in good shape . this is the last year i will hunt it . the time to replace a wood stand is before it shows any sign of age. most wait till it looks like it might fall before taking action and thats the main problem with wood stands imo .

I will hunt it this year and then retire it next year and just leave it for the memories...

I don't mean to sound rude, that is a death trap if I've ever seen one. If you were closer I would give you a new stand, in order to keep you out of that one. If you are dead set on hunting it, at least take an impact driver with a lot of 4-5 inch screws and beef it up! The last thing I want is for you to fall and die!!

That is a very good idea! Nails are just not reliable and easily pull out after a very small amount of wear and tear.
