Just as most people have said, they sound like a terrified woman screaming or sometimes like a baby cry/screaming very loudly. I have never been more scared than the first time I heard one. It was about 4:30 am, I was headed to a stand on public land in bath county va and I had know clue what I was hearing.

Actually heard it this morning as I walked out the door, it was in the woods not 20 yards from teh house, walked to the edge of the yard with a flashlight & couldnt see anything on the ground or in the trees, no fur, no eyes, no limbs shaking...nothing.
DISCLAIMER !!!! we're dealing with the over active imagination of my 2 daugters & wife so...
It made 3 calls back to back that lasted about 2 seconds each, the only way I've come close to replicating the sound is to whistle in as deep a tone you can bring the pitch up slightly at the end of the 2 second intreval, do it 3 times in a row, but it was way louder than I can whistle, it had quite a bit of volume to it, loud enuff that it really takes you by suprise.
I'm think'n maybe barred owl, we have plenty of foxes (coons also) but never heard of them make'n that sound.
The mystery continues.

I dont think a bobcat would hang around if you walked out there with a flashlight looking around. Those things are very stealthy and most likely (almost guarantee) wouldn't make a sound with a threat around. Sounds like a bird of some kind, probably an owl like you stated.
