Just wondering what the chances of the Buck hunt on Presidents Island being taken out of the Quota pool. Or put in it’s own Quota pool. In other words make it it’s own Quota draw and not tie in with the other Quota hunts. That way a hunter could put in for and possibly draw a doe hunt down on the Island or another Quota hunt on another WMA and also put in for the Buck hunt and keep their priority points for the Buck hunt.
Just curious!

I don't see that happening. It wouldn't be fair to the hunters that have been accumulating priorty points for several years in hopes of a PI hunt.

I'm saying leave those where they are, I'm on that list. Make it a seperate draw. Then some of the guys on that long list could put in for and possibly be drawn for other WMA hunts without loosing their priority points for the P.I. Buck hunt!

I somewhat agree with look'n 4 deer. A few other states have a drawing and you can put in for 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice hunt. If you get drawn for your 1st choice you lose your points but if you get drawn for 2nd or 3rd choice you get to hunt and keep your points.

I was just thinking of all the guy's that are applying every year to get the Buck hunt that would also love the opportunity to also hunt the Doe hunt down on the Island. The only reason the guys on the list don't apply for it or any other WMA is due to the fact that they will be drawn and lose their place in line on the Long List for the Buck hunt on the Island. I would like to hunt Doe down on the Island, just to get in there and scout for the Buck hunt if I ever get drawn. But I don't want to lose my place on the list. I know there is a 150 hunter quota for each Doe hunt. How many hunters apply and how many actually show up? If you let some of the guys on the Buck list hunt on the Doe hunt without losing their place on the list you would have a better turnout and more people would apply. Of course you might end up having to use a point system for that hunt then as well.

Back when this thing got started, the intention was to reduce the amount of does on the Island. I suggested having two doe hunts and if you harvest a doe you get to come back for a buck hunt. I doubt if they have 50 hunters show up for the doe hunts.

Same thing here -this was my 3rd year. I believe there were 35 there on Friday morning. Sunday evening, as far as I know, there was only one other person besides myself. I do think that a number of people pining away to get drawn for the buck hunt would participate the management hunts as a way to become familiar with the property. At the same time, its difficult to imagine there actually be 150 hunters out there. Seems like it would be a mad house. I imagine that the 150 number is more based on less than half of the people showing up.

Unless you live close or don't have a good place to hunt, why would you put in for the doe hunts? I don't think many people are going to drive from Middle or East TN for an opportunity to bow hunt a doe, while watching 130-140 inch bucks walk around that can't be harvested. Do like on the TN NWR and require a anterless deer be taken on the quota hunts before a buck can be taken...

I see the point that you are trying to make, but I hate that my chances at getting drawn for the doe hunts would drop heavily. Right now, I'm going on the doe hunt every other year (and sometimes consecutive years).
It will stop being a doe hunt and turn into a scouting trip. At least now most of the people going on the doe hunt are actually trying to kill deer.
That being said, I agree that it's pretty rough for the folks that hold out for the buck hunt for a pretty ridiculous length of time. That's the main reason that I don't apply.
What you propose also means that the odds of being drawn for the PI buck hunt will drop heavily from there on out, because there will be no true sacrifice for waiting on the draw - there would be no reason NOT to do it.

I like it the way it is. Some people are willing to sacrifice and some aren't. The chances of getting drawn for the buck hunt would then go way up bc no one would have to give anything up so more people would put in.

My brother shot a doe on PI on Friday I don't think they (My Dad or Brother...I've never applied) have ever gotten the draw for the buck hunt.

I wish PI was its own Quota hunt and applying for it, did not count me out of other hunts around the state, but it does. Every year I put in for PI just to accumulate points.
