I have 188k on my truck. Is it worth the extra money to get the high mileage oil change? Or is it just a gimmick? I've read that it doesn't matter, just as long as you keep the oil changed every 3000-5000 miles.

I'd keep right on rolling with the oil you've been using.

I swapped a high mileage vehicle over to high mileage oil once and my fuel mileage took a dive.

I have heard the same thing. Keep the oil changed regularly and avoid the extra expense.

Supposedly that high mileage oil is geared toward OLD cars, like vintage models that were originally run on leaded gas. Then repackaged and sold for "high mileage" vehicles.

I would keep using the oil that got you to 188,000 miles.

You haven't gotten to 188,000 miles with the higher priced oil, then I would do as the others have stated.
Keep on truckin with regular 5,000 oil changes.

Yeah, the said something about the Lucas Oil which is better. I opted for the standard oil change. I'll get it changed again after hunting season.

Here is my oil change regimen.

Oil change.
put sticker on windshield with +3000 miles.
Drive
Notice that I am getting close to mileage on sticker. Think....hmmmm need to change oil soon.
Drive
Look at sticker and notice that I am now approx 1000 miles OVER what is on the sticker. Think.. I really need to change my oil.
Drive
Look at sticker and see that I am almost 2000 miles OVER what is on the sticker... Think "Aiiieieee! I need to change my oil NOW!"
Drive about 200 more miles.
Finally change oil at about 5000 miles.
Repeat process.

I have 204500 on a toyota that is my daily driver. Never put any synthetic, blends, or high mileage stuff in it. Hmmm....as a matter of fact I'm still using the same brand as what was put in it at the first oil change.

365,000 miles: 1994 Toyota Corolla, never high mileage oil change, never synthetic oil, same engine, same transmission.
My answer to your question: Heck no.
