When I was young my brother and and I argued over the last couple slices of bread. My wonderful mother explained that the heel (end pieces) were special because there's lots of piece's of bread in a loaf, but only 2 heels! Since that day, it's my favorite slices out of the loaf. Lol

I will rephrase my earlier answer, If it is a pre sliced loaf - it is the end slice. If it is a bakery loaf - it is the heel.
I generally take the two end cuts, turn them crust side in and make a grilled cheese samich or PBJ.
