I shot this doe last night right at sunset. Blood tracking by flashlight was slow going with a light but consistent trail. She crossed two creeks and backtracked one time.

At about 9:00, I was on good blood and moving along pretty good when I spotted eyes glowing about 40 yards away. I nocked an arrow and tried to get close enough for a finishing shot.

Before I could get close enough, the deer got up and crashed off. I could tell by the sound that it was in bad shape.

When I got to where it was laying down, I found lots of blood. There were about three drops in the direction it headed, then nothing.

My second set of flashlight batteries were starting to get weak, so I decided to come back this morning to take up the trail.

By daylight, I found one more drop of blood, but it was enough to give me an idea of the general direction the deer ran. From there, I basically just took the path of least resistence, figuring she was hurt and would have done the same thing. About 75 yards from where I had last seen her, I found her piled up.

Thankfully it was cold last night and the coyotes hadn't found her so I'll be dining on tenderloin tonight.

The arrow went through the front of the thigh, angled up and entered the abdomen just in front of the udder and exited midway up the far side just behind the ribs. I have no idea how that could have happened with a downward shot angle. She was about 35 yards away so I didn't see whether she jumped the string or whether the arrow was deflected, or whether I just made a crappy shot.

Whatever the case may be, congrats on finding her before the coyotes and everything else that would love a dead doe!

Now that I think about it, the arrow was stuck in the ground at an angle that would have pointed back toward my stand. She was on the alert because another doe was blowing at me so maybe she somehow kicked her back legs up and got her body into an odd angle at the sound of the shot.

Good for you for not giving up. None of us make the perfect shot all the time that's a fact. The difference is you didn't give up and stayed the course. Your to be given props for that.

Thanks for the comments guys. After further reflection, the lesson I've learned from this deer is that long bow shots at alert deer are best avoided. I'm happy to have recovered the deer, but regret the lack of a quick kill.

Grant Woods noted the same thing on Growingdeer.tv this week. He did a slow motion replay of an alerted doe jumping the string causing a miss over her back. Good info.
