There is verly little difference in the recoil from the 270, to the 25-06 if any. If you want a lighter recoil, I suggest a 243. Good out to 200 yards.

Like Yamaha200 stated the recoil with a .270 or 25-06 will be about the same. Both calibers share the same parent case. [30-06]
If you want lighter recoil you could go with a .243, 7-08, or a .260.

It is extermely accurate and the recoil is very tolerable.

x2 I've drpped em at 350 yards. Some didnt take a step

One of the most accurate rifles out of the box I have ever shot was a Browning A-Bolt in 25-06 with a BOSS muzzle-brake. It was my buddies. It was literally like shooting a .22 Mag, little to no recoil, and basically shot in the same hole every time at 100 yards (off of a rest).

I see this topic come up often and its always funny to me. Growing up I started deer hunting with a .243 and didn't know they made bigger calibers till I was a bit older. But I remember on my first deer hunt with my Grandpa we saw some deer about 500-600yds off (my judgment wasnt great at that time, but I later verified it was about 560yds) I asked grandpa would it kill a deer if we shot them from that far? He stated if I could hit it from that far it would. He told me the longest shot he made on a deer was just a tad over 600yds with a .243 and the deer dropped in its tracks. Couldn't even see the deer after it fell on the other end of the bean field.

Is every hunter capable of those shots? No, but effectively a center fire rifle .223 and larger will consistently kill deer out to 200 yds and further with the right bullet and shooter.

To your original question, a 25-06 will shoot a very long ways, 200 yd ethical kills would not be a problem.

I would suggest the Hornady SST ammo.... you can get it in 117gr Custom Rifle ammo or the Superformance ammo... which will give you around 200 more fps.

If you still have a .270 (or one of the calibers listed), check out this Hornady ammo exclusively at Cabelas:

Hornady Custom Lite ammo

Perfect for beginning hunters and young or recoil-sensitive shooters, these rounds offer 26% to 43% less recoil than standard ammo with the deadly on-game performance you expect from Hornady. Each customized round features a carefully selected bullet weight and propellant blend for optimal on-game performance and velocity with reduced recoil.

I would suggest the 7-08 over the .243. To each his own, but I've lost several good deer with the .243, and had problems shooting all the way thru them.

I stuggled last year on buying a rifle for my wife. I found that bullet quality has improved substantially in the past few years, and that a .243 would be quite sufficient. However, not everywhere carries those bullets, but most placed carry 7-08 in 140gr. I bought a new Marlin bolt action, owned by remington now. Looks like a 700, with an accutrigger. It shoots lights out, and she dropped one at 155yds last year.

There isnt much difference in the 270, and 25-06 recoil wise, but remington makes the low recoil cartridges for both. If you went 25-06, I would go with the Hornady Light Magnums, and shoot the 117gr btsp.

If ever there was pure whitetail poison, the 25-06 definitely makes the very short list of ideal rounds. I shoot 110gr Accubonds and routinely achieve sub 1/2-minute groups if I do my part. There is very little guesswork required on the part of the shooter at distances most would feel probably border on the insane.

It's a fantastic round.

25-06 is a great round. I had great luck with the 120 gr. Winchester Positive Expanding Points. Accurate and dropped every deer I shot in their tracks.

I love my 25! I shoot a Rem 700 Classic and its killed more deer in the last 14 years in NC and SC than most people will ever see. I recently switched to factory Rem Ultra core-loks (green/gold box) NOT the green/yellow.

I will say mine will stomp the daylights out of you. Gun kicks like a mule. Its not me because I have had other 25-06's that did not kick plus other calibers that were pleasant to shoot. I have buddies shooting 300 win mags and will not shoot my 25.lol. I don't know why, but its simply one the hardest recoiling guns I've ever shot......but its worth it. lol. I could not recommend a 25 if they were all like mine, if your wanting lighter recoil. I would recommend the 260 rem.

I'm a new believer in the 25-06. A friend had a scope come loose while Elk hunting last week and reached for the guides 25-06. Dropped an Elk in his tracks at 150 yds.

i am sure you realize a 25-06 if just a 270 necked down to .257. recoil would be equal to a 270 if the weight of bullet was equal. since the 25-06 shoots a lighter bullet, it would kick ever so slightly less.

260 remington or 7mm08 may be a better choice

Yes it is. Slight difference in the 270. The 270 is just a tad bit more gun. I Have shot Mule deer with my 270 out to 325 yrds. The 25-06 will do it to if sighted in right.

I don't hunt with a .25-06 but, have got friends that do and they all say the same thing you do. They say a faster expanding 115-120 gr. bullet works good. Hope you get a biggun this year.

My Ruger m77 hawkeye is the best shooting gun right out of the box I have ever owned. It's the 26 ' heavy barrel in 25-06. I dropped a very large bodied deer last year bang flop at 328 yards.

My buddy shot a really big body Mule deer with a 25-06 using 115 grain bullet. Not sure which brand or anything. He shot it 3 times. The another guy shot it with a 7 mag, then it finally went down. Another mule deer, a pretty big one also was shot with a 25-06, same bullet type, and it dropped like a rock !

if you want them to drop at the shot, take out both shoulders
started hunting with one in the 70's, still have that Browning
but you can double lung one at 50 yards and he can run another
100 yds. But I got mine to ground hog hunt with at the time.
and have killed one at 365 yds.

I just like 30 cal's better now

Very hard to beat a 25.06... I watched my 16 yr old drop 2 where they stood with his savage accutrigger last year, one I had missed at 240 yds and the other at just shy of 200... Awesome round! And he was shooting cor-loks...
