I am looking at getting an AR and was wanting to ask a few questions of you more experienced guys. I am planning to get it for personal plinking, but mainly for my daughter to use to deer hunt with nextseason (she will be 7). I am not a purist, nor will I be doing the tacticool mods, just a simple T6 stock, flat top AR will be just fine. I like the OR format of the DPMS Oracle, but with the recent price increases I can get a Del Ton or Doublestar for about the same price, but they have the front sight to get in the way of the scope. The latter two seem to be better built and have better furniture, but not a chrome lined barrel, which the Oracle has. What are your reccomendations on this?
Also, how is the front sight issue remedied without major further expense? I don't particularly like the use of a riser, as I would like to keep the scope (either a Nikon 2-7x or an old Weaver fixed 2.5x) mounted as low as possible for a good stock-cheek weld for my little one, but someone may tell me that this is not an issue, and that is why I am asking for experienced advice. I just don't want the front sight to obscure the sight picture. I have heard of shaving the front sight, but how hard is this to cover the bare metal, espcially if not removed from the gun to do the mods (I don't have the special AR tools)?
Also, the Doublestar is offered in an HBAR configuration, but how much additional weight does this actually add? As I said, I want my daughter to use it, so I don't want too much additional weight out front, but it may help her a little with recoil.
Last of all, how do you get past the loud noise made from "ramming one home" in the dark quiet of the morning in the deer woods? Do you ease it home and use the forward assist?
I will be reloading for this, so I will probably use 60gr Partitions or 65gr Gamekings, so I am not too concerned with hunting ammo availability.

forward assist,I pu a bushmaster to set up for my grandkids,bought a low-med-high-xtra high set of rings.I used it set up to med & mounted a 3x9x32 & you cant see the front sight even though it has to be blocking part of the site picture.The med was needed to get the head up off the stock ,good luck with your purchase & hunt.

You can take the front sight tower off and replace it with a low gas block,not real hard to do.

Your front sight base will be held on by very robust means. The easiest procedure would be to shave your front sight. Do this:

You don't have to remove the gas block from the barrel to do this. You just probably can't replicate the geometry of a micro gas block as he did (not a big deal).

PH, thanks for your thoughts and pics. Those look great. I want the dust cover and forward assist, that is why I was originally leaning toward the Oracle. Is there any reason why you like the DPMS over the other two brands?
Mike, are you saying that you mounted the scope right on top of the flat top pic rail using standard medium bases?
Anybody have any overall suggestions on the Del Ton or Doublestar?

Also check out palmetto state armory online if you have a FFL who will transfer it for you. They have a couple of good deals right now on AR's with free floated forearms and removable sights. I think its less than $20 shipping and no sales tax. My local FFL charges $30 to transfer. Because the stock on the AR comes straight back with no fall, you will want to raise the scope to get a proper cheek weld. Also mount the scope before you cut down the FSB, on both of my AR's you dont notice it in the scope unless you are at low power and even then its nothing more than a slight blur at the bottom of the scope.

I have a few different AR-15's. I utilize my 6.8spc for deer and my 5.56 for plinking/small varmint type animals.
One with forward assist and dust cover and one without...
IMO - The forward assit and dust cover are basicaly a feature that is not used at all in a hunting application. While I was in the USMC - absoutly a necessity but for hunting/plinking I can't tell you when I have used it.
Off the shelf AR's can be picked up from just about any manufacturer and all entry level are basically the same. They function good, shoot good (accuracy), and do what you need it to do.
I like a flattop so I can mount any type of optics or any type of iron sight. Furniture is just up to your preference.
Good luck with our decision and with getting your daughter into hunting.

I consider the 3 brands you mention in the same tier of quality. Since I own several DPMS products and they have given excellent service I lean that way. Plus they make configurations that I prefer without having to add/subtract parts. It is very easy to get a hunting AR too heavy with long heavy barrels especially for young shooters. Good luck in your quest-the options and decisions are endless. My ARs are hunting rifles-in fact they are about all I use now for deer and coyotes. PH
