Went to the lease and did a little squirrel hunting. I had one barking at me. Think goodness I never seen him.

you know I always see the most squirrels early in the morning while deer hunting. When I go squirrel hunting I may kill anywhere from zero to 3 but sightings are less frequent. Maybe I need to try deer hunting squirrels!

I have that same problem. I have two theories:

1. I generally wait until it's cold to squirrel hunt, and in November/December I'm focused on deer hunting. That means I don't squirrel hunt much until January rolls around. At that point, food availability is down, and they are eating nuts in their dens that have been stored away.

2. Deer hunting usually involves sitting very still, which allows the squirrels to feel comfortable about running around. Often times, squirrel hunters are doing lots of walking. If you are hunting in a prime tim & area and still seeing no squirrels, there's a chance you just need to sit down and wait a while instead of covering so much ground.

Just some thoughts that I've been mulling over lately. It's also prompted me to go squirrel hunting earlier in the season (during archery season, especially). Guess what - I've seen a ton of them!

Here is something I realized. I put up a ground blind in a hickory thicket with a bunch of oaks mixed in for hunting in the rain/with the old lady. Well I hunted in there 2 weeks ago while it was raining and I swear I counted 23 squirrels and that was just what I could see. My realization is that I'm hunting squirrels out of my ground blind when deer season is over. I believe I will be wearing them out doing this.

Yep it's because you are sitting still and letting the squirrels come out of hiding and do their business. I always see the most right around daybreak and early morning. But when I actually squirrel hunt I prefer to walk around and look for them running up the trees. Sightings are fewer but it's a quick paced hunt and nice to walk through the woods popping the occasional squirrel.

I hunt squirrels slow and easy, When I find what looks like a good place where they are cutting I sat down and wait.
