I was talking to a coworker tonight and he told me about some kids in the neighborhood that were making those bombs with The Works cleaner and aluminum foil. Put some foil in a plastic water bottle, pour in the Works, screw on lid and get away or just chuck the bottle. Pops like a 12 gauge turkey load. I have done it with Muriatic acid but it's been several years since I made one. Lots of people have done it, and there are plenty of youtube videos. But back on the story - these kids were doing it in the neighborhood, but on common ground away from houses (not sure how long ago) and the cops showed up, and arrested them with a felony charge... they were minors so got a lot of probation but what the heck, I did not know that a simple homemade water bottle bomb would be a felony? does anyone here know the laws better than me?

I don't know about the legalities, but I know these such things bacame a lot more serious after 9/11 in this era of "terrorism".

I don't know about the legalities, but I know these such things bacame a lot more serious after 9/11 in this era of "terrorism". that is true, but if you have seen these they aren't that harmful. The acid used is the worst part as it can burn you, and the reaction creates hydrogen gas, but there is no ignition/combustion in the explosion. Just a cheap plastic bottle bursting apart and a bit of mess to clean up. Wear safety goggles and rubber gloves, it's just like an experiment in science class but a little more wild. I don't see how it could be considered a felony... maybe just Franklin cops doing what they do best, finding a way to pick on someone or get them in trouble...

If this is the same group of kids I heard about (In Franklin, between 14 and 16), several of the bottles were found close to houses and a resident was injured when he picked one up and it exploded in his hands. They were charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment due to the injury.

That would make much more sense that they were charged for those things rather than just for making the bombs. When I made the acid bomb(s) it was in my backyard (sorry neighbors, lol) and I cleaned up the mess and didn't just leave unexploded bottles lying around.

Jail would be the safest place for me when my father found out about something like this.

Took me a while to hunt down the article.
If that wasn't a felony, it certainly should have been,

When someone makes an unregistered explosive device the authorities dont neccesarily just look at how powerful it is when deciding what charge to levy. Since terrorism has reared its head in the past few years you will find that ANYONE making any type of explosive is going to face more serious consequences than they probably would have years ago. The bottom line is that there are lots of things in this world to play with that dont explode. If a person chooses to do something illegal like making bombs they need to realize that there are consequences to those choices. Dont do the crime if you cant do the time...
