There is an e-clip that can be removed, to remove the pin that hold the safety lever in place, and you can get to the detent ball much easier. Its a rascal to reassemble, but patience will be rewarded.

the flat spring that holds pressure on the ball is your trouble,,I will say it,,I have laid them out with the bowed side up and hit them with a hammer,,hit it too hard and you will have to buy another one,,one light tap with a 22 ounce framing hammer will usually do the trick..

UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED
Finally got around to tinkering with the safety and thanks to all the replies to this post I got it fixed. I love this place!
I took the small plate off that holds the steel ball in place and it was dry as a bone. While I had the plate off I flattened it out just a little with a small hammer and put grease on the ball. Reinstalled and it is very smooth but not smooth enough that it will get knocked off safety.
