Let me draw up a picture. Last chance/day for me to bow hunt (schedule). A couple minutes of legal shooting light left - right as camera man goes to put up his camera, out comes ones of the bucks I have been after. He quickly eases in and the camera man can't get the camera going - the camera shutters - deer looks right at us - I'm at full draw n he's facing straight at me (20 yards) with his chest poked out. Buck fever hits and THUMP - nailed him - chest shot. Give him an hour to expire, find the arrow about 60 yards from where I hit him - blood almost all the way up to the fletching and a lot of blood around the arrow (small puddles). Blood 2 yards away from the arrow, then poof gone nothing. I searched around for another hour then gave up for the night. Any suggestion when I go on the search tomorrow morning. Also, with this cooler weather will the meat still be good if I find him before the coyotes do?

Meat will be fine. If he isn't real close just start the grid search. Chest shots are notorious for internal bleeding. Obviously check water, thickets, blowdowns first good luck

Nephew has a chocolate lab. Never had him the woods though. Might be a good time to break him in.

I've had straight on chest shots never yield a drop of blood. But, when you field dress the chest cavity is full. I think with a solid hit, he won't be far. Will be nice a cool tonight, a big plus for you.

check the thickest thickets, the ones you want to steer around when searching for him. Best of luck

If it was straight on and and had blood up to the fletchings, he shouldn't be far. But deer never cease to amaze me by how tough they are. Good luck your meat should be ok! Keep us posted. And pics when you recover!

Odda are not goo if you had no blood on a straight on chest shot. Stand where the deer ran and think where you would go if you were in tremendous pain.
Always keep in mind, deer in pain do not think clearly. With a shot like that, in all probability, the deer is just running in a blond panic for the first 50-75 yards. Then it may start to think. Just go look.

Sorry for the slow Update (no signal where I hunt) - the rain did wash all signs away. Had a friend to go help me look. Searched all morning through thickets valleys brush piles etc. nothing. We covered the whole hunting area. I hate it, have that sick feeling, was looking forward to some deer jerky. Thanks for all the replys, encouragement, and tips. Not the way I anticipated ending bow season. Looking forward to muzzle loader season in November. Thanks once again.

Well, Nacho, as they say...critters gotta eat too...better luck on the next one. I am curious if there is any water around your area? Like a creek or stream...maybe a lake or large pond?

Poleaxe thanks for the offer. I will keep you in mind if it happens again. Is there water around? No, not on the land I hunt. Adjacent land, yes there is a large pond about 1 mile out (opposite direction from where the deer ran). I'm not aware of other water sources within the area. Topo map just shows trees.

look for water and start walking in circles. letting it lay over night was best move as it will bed and bleed out. dog might help but might send you on every trail in woods if not trained for blood
