sitting in a homemade stand on a bit of land I can hunt, just got done clearing shooting lanes with Mudbone. He left and I wasn't in the stand 20 min before deer came in feeding on privet. Doe stepped out, shot right behind the shouulder, but a little low. Fawn then stepped out, sad to say, I must have pulled cause the arrow passed through the guts. I will look for the doe within the next hour and give the fawn more time. The doe left blood and the bloody arrow came out after she ran 10 yards. Have good hopes for doe, not so much for fawn, wish me luck.

As said, good chance the fawn will be somewhere close to the doe. If you have no blood at all, look in that area. Hope you find both.

I gotta head to bed because of work tomorrow morning.

Will post the story / pics some time tomorrow, probably afternoon.

Short story, found the doe, ran out of time to look for fawn. I doubt the fawn would have been anywhere near the doe, because it ran in almost the opposite direction (but both deer were facing broadside to the right in the same spot when I shot them)

If I didn't have work in the morning I might go look for it, but I guess them coyotes will have to eat some. I feel bad but learned something - should have stopped the deer before shooting. I thought it had stopped, but my best guess is that it took another step forward right when I shot. Funny I couldn't tell if it was moving when I shot but I watched the arrow drill through the middle of the deer.

Will get story up tomorrow most likely. Tagged and got the deer home, and cut all the hams, shoulders, straps and tenderloins in about an hour and a half. Barely room in the fridge for them. Might let them sit a day or two or might transfer to a cooler of ice to age them for 2 or 3 days. Gonna be eating good soon!

Okay. Just me but...

#1- I probably would call in sick and go look.
#2-Being a fawn, real good chance it did not go far.
#3- "...but I guess them coyotes will have have to eat..." is not something I would have said or thouoght until I had done a whole lot of looking.
#4- Really doubt the deer walking was the problem.

But that is just me and the way I think.

I think it was the deer walking that caused the bad shot. I could have pulled, but I think I saw the deer step forward. But yeah I should have looked more than I did, but couldn't call in sick... Now that I think of it, it wouldn't have hurt to take an extra 15 mins to scour the area I heard the fawn run off, when I was hauling the doe out. Oh well, next time I hope it turns out better.

Don't worry about it, you did good!

Just be more patient with your shot and tracking next time.

thanks master chief, I definitey learned something and will do things a bit differently next time. I will say the heat of the moment causes you to shoot more instinctively than the slower approach to target shooting. Just a couple hours before I shot the deer, I was in my backyard and shot at 10 and 20 yards, and both were perfect kills. But when those deer stepped out I just kind of let er fly. If I had said a simple "mehh" to stop the fawn, I bet it would have been a double lung shot.

LOL- If you are hunting mature deer bucks or does and it is late in the season, camo is not too overrated.

Sure, I hunt a lot in shorts and a T-shirt and I kill a lot of deer. But even in shorts and a T-shirt, I wear a face mask and gloves. And once it gets cool and the leaves start to fall, I tend to wear camo. It is easy to fool the early season, dumb deer. Little different story once they have a scare or two.

I see your point bowriter. This doe was not on public land or accustomed to being hunted. On public land I always wear camo but then I wonder, isn't camo what the deer are trained to be afraid of? Maybe just dull natural solid colors so your movement is less noticed. I don't know, I will still wear camo most of the time because I have it and it makes me feel les visible, but in some cases I'm fine with jeans and a T shirt.

for yall waiting on pics, I will post the story here shortly.

Catman-the best camo any of us can ever wear is no movement. Good camo lets you get away with a little movement. Movement is what deer see. Once deer get spooky as they do later in the season even on the best of private ground, a little movement sends them somewhere else.

The brand of camo, except for two, does not matter. The type of camo does. Two camo brands (maybe more that I am not aware of) make a type that is better than the rest at allowing slight movement.

In all cases, IMO a face mask and gloves are madatory. That is what moves the most.

I usually use a facemask but no gloves until it gets cold... but once it's later in the season when I would need them more, it's plenty cold enough for me to need gloves (hands lose circulation easily).

I know the movement is what they see. Only time I was picked out because the way I looked, was by a turkey hen on public land. I had the mask, gloves, everything but she saw me sitting there frozen with my gun and knew exactly what was up.

Just curious - what are the two camos that are better than the rest?

ASAT Ultimate 3-D and one who imitates tham and I cannot for the life remember if it is Mossy Stump or Billy Jerdans brand. One of them has a leafy suit with a color comb. very similar to ASAT.
