I currently have a Droid Pro that has been replaced once and now this one is doing the same thing. I stopped by Verizon yesterday and can get an upgrade so I’ve narrowed it to these options. I’m cheap and leaning toward the IPhone 4 because it’s FREE but want opinions of what you have and if you like it. I use it for work and surfing the web sometimes at night but don’t stream music through it, etc. One of my employees and my brother have the Razr Maxx and love them but our office is right on the line to 4G so it goes back and forth searching between 3G and 4G eating up his battery causing him to plug it up sometimes at work. This bothers me big time even though the Razr Maxx is supposed to have the best battery life. My brother said he doesn’t have that problem where he lives.

IPhone 4 is free, has 8gb, 3G, and 5mp camera
IPhone4S is $99, has 16gb, 3G, and 8mp camera
Droid Razr Maxx is $199, has 16gb, 4G and 8mp camera

I have had the 16GB iPhone 4S for a year and absolutely love it. I mainly use mine for calls, texts, taking pictures and occasionally some apps for weather, hunting and such. My service is with AT&T. I have been thoroughly impressed with this phone thus far.

I have the Razr Maxx and I absolutely love it. Battery life is lot better than the Iphone and I normally go every other day between charges. Don't let the 4G scareyou away it is amazing.

The guy I work with says even with the better battery life he charges it every night because when it goes to 3G it starts searching for 4G. A few times he's had to charge it at the office. That's the problem with my Droid Pro now. My battery is toast by 11:00. $200 vs. free is also factoring in quite heavily.

I just have the Std Razor for a couple of months. Not as good as my Droid X, maybe the 4g searching has something to do with it. I also have the windsheild dock so I can use it as a GPS and charge it as I drive, works ok, but gets hot as he!!.

For those of you with the Razr (I have the original, none maxx) it is easy to turn off 4g to help save battery life. The only time I notice the speed difference with 4g is when I stream video on it and I can get a almost two full days of heavy talk and email usage out of it.

I wanted durability, more than speed, that's why I chose the Casio Commando G'z One. I've had it since Dec and have had no problems with it. It's a military spec phone.

Battery life on my 4S is not good. My son's 4, however, only gets charged every few days and he is on the thing all the time. The vibration on it is better, too. I wish I had done the free 4 and not the 4s. I will say that I don't have the issues with the iphone that I did with my android. The signal is better as well.

Have you implemented any of the battery saving measures? If not, you may want to try some of these to see if they help. Best of luck! http://ipod.about.com/od/iphone3g/tp/iphone-battery-life.htm

I tried some but gave up and keep all location services off unless needed and keep all apps closed when not in use. I also don't save stuff to the cloud. I shouldn't have to but it is what it is. I do like that I turn the phone on and it works. No freezing, locking up or flat out turning itself off. My texts don't go to random people anymore either. \:\)

My wife has a Razor Maxx and that thing is awesome. If you had the Pro, you will be familiar with the OS. However, this would be a huge upgrade. The battery lasts forever. As soon as my upgrade date comes up, I'm getting one as well.

I have a Droid X2 and it has been nothing but trouble for me. Has been replaced 5 plus time (really cannot remember). Took it in last month and they said they would replace it again but I told them no, just did a reset but still cuts off by itself all the time. I will be getting an Iphone next time.

I switched to the iPhone 4s in January, and as much as I hate to say it, the iPhone is excellent. I get very good battery life, and it works everywhere - including places BBs and Droids will not. I don't surf with it, but for mail, txt, phone and camera it's the best I've had.

I'd be better off just having someone go pick it out and bring it to me. Did I mention I hate shopping for a new cell phone?

In all seriousness I'll probably go with the Iphone 4S.

I find smartphone opinions cause more hurt feelings than a messy divorce, so I'll just say to check out the JuiceDefender app when you make your choice.

With moderate use I was ending the day with about 20% power. After I got the app and let it work for a few days I'm ending the day with roughly 55% power. It varies depending on how much you actually use the phone, but it was a fairly impressive change.

I have been a IPhone user for along time. I was looking forward to the iPhone 5 since my upgrade was ready. I was really disappointed when the 5 came out with the lack of innovation. To me it was the same old thing. I decided to get the Samsung Galaxy S3. It is a awesome phone with alot more capabilities than the iPhone. It's smoking fast with alot bigger screen.

I originally had an Android and swore by it. I swore I'd never own an iPhone. When the iPhone 4 came to Verizon, I gave it a shot. I loved it. After using it for a year and a half, I just switched back to an Android this week (the Samsung Galaxy S III). No real reason other than boredom and wanting to try something new. I like tech stuff...

My thoughts:

iPhone 4
----------
I don't have many complaints about this. I wish it was 4g, but it isn't... oh well. The camera is actually very good. Even though it's only 5mp, it has a high quality sensor that is as good (if not better) than many 8mp cameras.

I love the fact that Apple has the Photostream. Pictures I took on the iPhone synced automatically with the photo gallery in the software on my Macbook or iPad. If you don't have an iPad or an Apple computer, you probably won't care about this. You can use Drop Box or something similar on the Android.

I also love that I can wirelessly sync my iTunes library. If you don't use iTunes, this won't matter.

The iPhone is very reliable. In the 1.5 years I had mine, it never froze, crashed, etc.

I don't like the fact that the iPhone requires a specific charger. If you're at work, and your battery is dying, you can't borrow someone else's charger unless they have an iPhone.

I love the iPhones size, but HATE the way it is made. You must use a case. Often this increases the size of the phone tremendously. I broke the back of my iPhone twice by dropping it from a height of 2-3 ft. That is $30 to replace. Another time it landed face down and cracked the front. That is $200 to replace. The phone has no texture to it, so it's almost like they made it as slick as possible on purpose so you WOULD break it and they could make money on repairs. The phone could benefit a lot from some simple texture on the sides.

I do not particularly like the navigation on the iPhone. On the iPhone 4, it isn't "turn by turn". In other words, it isn't like a GPS in your car which tells you to "turn now". It will give you the entire route, and you have to click "next" everytime you make a turn to know what to do next. This is flat out dangerous if you are driving and trying to look down.

iPhone 4s
----------
I don't see any real benefit to the iPhone 4s. I have several coworkers that have it, and none of them like Siri. We also can't tell much difference in the quality of the pictures, even though the camera is 8mp. If I had the choice of paying for the 4s or getting the 4 for free, I would DEFINITELY take the 4 for free.

Android
----------
In my opinion, the Android is much better for handling email if you use Gmail. My company uses corporate Gmail, and it's tons better on an Android than an iPhone.

The Android is generally more configurable. The phones aren't locked down as much as Apple products, so you can find an app to do just about anything you want. Don't like the keyboard? Change it. Want different sound profiles? No problem.

Androids can be more unreliable. If you only install well known programs for reputable companies, you will probably not have any problems. In the past, some of my Androids would freeze occasionally. I would sometimes have to pull the battery out to reset it. So far, I have not experienced any sort of problems with my newest Android.

Most Android phones use a micro USB charger. It's very standard, and very common. They're everywhere.

Android also has real "turn by turn" navigation. You punch in your destination, it tells you exactly when to turn. You have no need to keep picking up your phone. I use navigation a lot, so this is important to me.

-------

If you just want a phone for email and browsing, you can't go wrong with either. I think you'll like either one.

Here is a topic I may be able to offer some advice.

I like some other posters once vowed that I would never own an Iphone. My first smartphone experience began with the original Motorola Droid. At first I was amazed by the customization and commonly said to my Iphone friends "anything Iphone can do, Droid can do better". After approximately 6-9 months, the Motorola Droid lost its mind. After replacing it with the same model through Verizon shortly thereafter, the same fate was suffered by the replacement Droid.

So I sweet talked my wife (who had a dumb phone at the time) to let me use her upgrade to get a new phone. I opted for a second android OS phone, the Droid Incredible. The phone started off to be fantastic. However, after approximately 9 months, the incredible started to suffer the same fate as the previous Motorola Droid (lagging, jittery, random functions executed without command such as random dialing, etc).

My wife decided she wanted to upgrade to a smartphone. She wanted the Iphone 4, but since 4g phones had recently been released with Verizon, I talked her into the HTC Thunderbolt. After one day we realized that wasn't the ticket due to bluetooth compatibility issues with some of our peripherals, so it was returned and she selected the LG Revolution. The revolution, just like all the others started out great, but has become the biggest piece of crap so far. The problems I previously mentioned times 10.

So, after out 5th android phone exhibiting the same symptoms and with the release of Iphone 5, I made the switch and it is fantastic. I haven't had it for the time that I had androids before they started having issues, but for the week I have owned this phone, something is different. The functionality is incredible. Much better than the android phone. A friend of mine ordered a Samsung GSIII last week and is returning it for an iphone 5 after messing with mine. My brother has a GSIII and wished he would have waited for the Iphone 5. BTW, he owned a Samsung Fascinate and it literally fell apart, as well as the same old issues my wife and I suffered with our Android phones. Apple has the stability and function of their machines down to a T. If i had to choose between a 4g android and a 3g Iphone, I would honestly choose the Iphone. However, I would recommend the Iphone 5. The maps are good. I have had no issues with the new apple maps (and I travel 50% for my job; also includes turn by turn voice navigation). The battery life is way better than any android I have owned. The camera is unmatched. The speed and smoothness is not duplicated by android phones. The call quality is much better. App integration with social media seems more robust with the apple OS system and are generally better constructed and more aesthetically appealing. The screen size on the Iphone 5 is perfect (I find the Samsung GSIII to be a little unwieldy when using my brothers phone). The screen is better visually than the Samsung (yep I said it).

As brother's do we have competed our phones against one another, and I will say "Iphone does it better than Android".

We also own a 4 year old macbook pro. You know how many times it has crashed? Exactly zero. I am a convert. Iphone all the way.

recently published survey claims Android smartphones suffer from a relatively high failure rate, at least compared to Apple, Microsoft and RIM.

According to British telecom consulting firm WDS, 14% of approximately 60,000 support calls over a 12-month period were related to Android hardware issues.

In contrast, Windows Phone 7 accounted for 9% of support calls, Apple’s iPhone for 8%, while RIM’s BlackBerry weighed in at an impressive 3.7%.

WDS rep Craig Rich explained that “hardware faults” varied between Android handset OEMs, with certain brands showing a “propensity” towards display failures, keypad/button malfunctions and various battery issues.

“Android has been a runaway success and has been instrumental in bringing smartphone technology to the mass-market. Its open nature, coupled with the greater availability of hardware components and a reduction in manufacturing costs has seen some manufacturers bring the price-point of Android smartphones down below $100,” said Rich.

“However, the Android ecosystem is not without its faults. Many of the factors that have led to Android’s success are driving varying levels of hardware quality into the market, in turn delivering an inconsistent customer experience.”

As James R. Hood of Consumer Affairs notes, other major platforms all maintain “tight control” over their hardware, while Google’s Android, as a semi open-source platform, does not.

“[For example], Windows Phone 7 licensed to only five manufacturers while both the iPhone and Blackberry have just one manufacturer each.

“In fact, both Apple and Blackberry-maker RIM manufacture their own phones and thus control every step of the design and manufacturing process.”

Phandroid’s Chris Chavez expressed similar sentiments and acknowledged that “just about any” Android user has been forced to deal with a hardware defect on at least one device.

“It kind of comes with the turf. The sheer scope of Android manufacturers from all around the world is no doubt playing in a role in these failure rates and fanboys will no doubt make this a point.

“[Of course], what would be interesting to see is the amount of support calls dealing with specific OEM’s. But same goes when comparing any kind of Android market share to the iPhone – I always like to see how one specific device is selling when compared the Apple’s handset. Fair is fair, right?”
