I had a friend that had a child go through the Hunter's Safety course this weekend out at the Hobson Pike Firing Range, and those that attended the class were instructed that it is illegal to not immediately attach a temporary tag and permanent tag when obtained to the carcass of wildlife that they were in possesion of. I thought this was changed a couple of years ago when we went to the new on-line check-in process—that we only had to be in possesion of the tag when claiming possesion of taken wildlife (tag in pocket, wallet, etc...)? I asked him to ask them to double check their facts, and they once again told him that it was illegal to NOT have it on the animal—even if it is regular printer paper from home from the new check-in procedure....they said to put it in a bag and then attach it so no fines could be given. Could someone, scn/BGG, clear this up and clarify what is the correct procedure? Thanks guys!

They were incorrect. There is no longer a requirement for the tag to be attached.
If you would, please pm me the name(s) of the instructor so we can get them educated of the change.

But, does the tag have to be punched or marked. (say it is in your wallet on the drag out). Thanks in advance

Yes, the tag has to be invalidated by punching out or marking the appropriate information before field dressing, moving, or transporting the animal.
It does not have to be attached to the animal, but does have to be taken care of before dragging out the animal.
