I hunted with a compound for years. It was fun, but I lost interest. I'm thinking of looking into getting a crossbow for next season if everything works out. It's something different and I think I'd like to try it. Naturally, I've got some questions.

1) I like the idea of a recurve, and Excalibur seems to be leading the pack in that field. Since I would only hunt with it a few times a year and then spend the rest of the time plinking in the yard, several people have recommended the Axiom, which I believe comes in a kit, because of the cost and ease of setup. Any feedback on that? Good or bad?

2) Strings. This is kind of a trivial matter, but are there places that make custom crossbow strings? I used to love having an orange/black string on my compound (I only bowhunted in October and it just matched with the whole Halloween thing) and that one was made by Winner's Choice. Are there similar options for crossbow shooters? Like I said, not critical but something I'm curious about.

3) Scopes. Are the scopes that come with the kits adequate, or should I look into dropping another hundred or so dollars on aftermarket optics?

I'm sure there will be more, but those are the things that immediately came to mind. Thanks for the help.

Here's a good custom x-bow replacement string site. I picked one up from them 2 years ago and it's great.

Excellent, thanks. I'll make a note of that and use them if I go through with this.

I have an Axiom and love it. 2 inch groups at 50 yards. Father has a Horton 175 and mine outshoots it big time. I use the Firebolts that came with the kit with 100 gr NAP Spitfire Maxx heads, and use the normal string which came on it and I love how it performs. I have read where they recommend the Flemish string as a replacement if you want more speed, but I haven't seen a need yet. The Excalibur is a little wider than the Horton, but much lighter. To me the scope on it is just fine, and held dead on this year after being stored during off-season, which surprised me since I took the string off to relieve pressure.

I have an Excalibur exomax (225 lb). It is a great shooting bow. But if I had to do it over I would buy the vixen (175 lb). Reason being the high poundage of the exomax will really eat up the serving on strings. My brother has the vixen and it shoots just as good and is quieter. Its not quite as fast but is plenty fast enough. He shot a ten point @ 45 yds last year. Just my thoughts. But you can't go wrong with any Excalibur. And there is a guy who makes custom strings... boo something. Check out the Excalibur website and forum and you'll find him

The Excal scopes are great, I have the varizone on my Exomax and have absolutely no complaints. I think they offer a couple of other options, but like morgancountry said, check their websight and go to their video section and there is like a product information/tutorial catalog with a video of each of their products. It makes research very easy on the Excals and their products.
