I got these photos from trail cams within 200 yards of each other. The first was taken in late August, and the second (night photo) was taken on 9/10/2012. The night photo deer looks like he has some junk around the bases of his antler. The tallness makes me think I may be dealing with the same deer. The daytime picture looks like a very clean tall 8 pointer. I also added a third picture which is the full picture of the first one. The 8 pointer was running with 4 other bucks.

Looks like an extra tine coming out on the hard horn picture on his right side? If it weren't for that I would say it was the same buck but if that's another tine it may be a different buck.

Regardless, hes not a 130 class - hes more like 143-147. As for age, looks like a classic 3.5 year old in the hard horn picture. They don't get much more perfect than him. I hope you get him.

He's very tall. Maybe in the rut Ill get my chance. In the night photo he was by a persimmon tree. Maybe I can catch him slipping earlier during bow season.

Unfortunately, the images--being pictures of pictures on a TV or computer screen--aren't clear enough to say. Can you post the original pictures?

I'll try BSK. I don't have internet at my home other than my cell phone. So I have to upload through that. Which doesn't help with lighting in both cases. I had to lighten the photo with my computer and then work with the lighting when taking the picture with my phone.... I also have some other bucks (smaller 8 points) I would like to know the age of. I guess I need to get the laptop to some wifi. Thanks for observing BSK and thanks for everyone else's input. This deer has me working double time.

Boone I had thought the same thing. I'm doing a little wishful thinking and hoping that maybe there are 2 deer and that they are just the same genepool.

Also BSK, I have found 3 scrapes already this year. 2 of them were really good ones. I peed in all of them but only had 2 cameras to set up. I've been fighting the urge to check them but I want to give them atleast 2 weeks. 1 week is gone so hopefully some more pics to come next week. I'm guessing the deer are using these scrapes only for communication right now and not mating. Correct? ..... On a side note, I have not been using a pee bottle the last 2 years. I have observed some deer that seem naturally skiddish, to some that seem overly skiddish when they have approached my stand after I have relieved myself. Some deer are curious. For instance, I had a 4 pointer last week walk right under my stand and sniff the urine. He even stood in it and sniffed my tow rope hanging from above. He walked away feeding on acorns. Then last friday I observed a doe sniff a spot where I had relieved myself 2 mornings before. So for now I'm sticking with the no pee bottle regimen. I don't think it has cost me any deer sightings. In the case of last year where I peed in deer scrapes. I think it actually increased deer activity, as there were multiple scrapes made around the original afterwards. Thats all. Well be in touch. Thanks

I too have been finding more scrapes than usual for this time of year. I checked my records and I didn't start finding the first surge of scraping activity until October 6th last year. Counted 10 fresh ones yesterday, and moved several cameras off food plots and onto scrapes (although some are "combo" set-ups; a camera pointed across a scrape but still covering the food plot beyond the scrape).

Actually, many researchers are really beginning to question the idea that scrapes have that much to do with breeding. When looking at visitation patterns (who is visiting scrapes and how often) scrape visits are heavily male dominated. Male visits can outnumber female vists by astronomical differences, sometimes at ratios of 20 or even 50 to 1 male versus female. Although scraping behavior is triggered by the sequence of events surrounding the breeding season, they are probably far more about male to male communication and influence than they are about male to female communication and influence.

The question is, are they skiddish because of the smell of the pee or skiddish because of the human scent floating around the area? Your body sheds dead skin cells and hair folicles at unbelievable rates, and no matter the breeze, some of that human scent carrying material is sinking down to the ground around your stand.

I agree on all counts. The last point is why I'm sticking to the no pee bottle regimen. I think the deer were pretty much acting normal.... Do you think the weather from last year have may something to do with all the early scrapes? I believe it was unseasonably warm. Don't know why that would make the males want to communicate more. Maybe because of the heavy acorn mast weve had this year the bucks are claiming their feeding areas. But that's backwards. I would be more apt to claim a feeding area if food was scarce. I don't know. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to address my curiosity. Still can't wait to check those cameras Saturday. I wish I had about 10 more. I read where you said black flash is the only way to go. Do you have a certain economical brand I should shop for? Also, I'm still going to post the pics of the bachelor group I have from this year. Maybe you could help me age these deer. I'm getting better, but would appreciate your opinion. Good day.

Thanks Deerhunter! He's got me TORE UP. I hope I get to see him in the flesh this year. During bow season would be nice. I put my wife in the spot where the bachelor group pic was taken. That would be awesome if she could get him for her first deer. He may be bigger than anything I've ever shot!
