Deer hunted Sat am. Acorns, Persimmons, Hickory everywhere.
even with all the acorns, Whites, reds, chestnut, they were cutting hickories. IS that their #1 preferred food? I would have figured they would be stuffed full of acorns.

My guess is that it probably is. One of the old timer inlaws always mentions the squirrels cutting hickory nuts during early squirrel season.

It's been my experience that yes they prefer hickory nuts over acorns anytime. Don't know why, looks like acorns would be a lot easier to eat, they are cutting the heck out of the hickory's here at the house and we have plenty of acorns as well..

I think it is like Hickory/Pecans, beach nuts, then the OAKS...
but can cut any as soon as they get ripe....

yes I hate it because the hickories are my #1 preferred nut in the woods too... I see squirrels sometimes on oaks, sometimes on walnuts, ALWAYS on hickory nuts. Even big stands of many mature hickories full of nuts still get mostly wiped out.

On my little property they are cutting Hickories then running to the big red oak to eat them.
