Any one grow Allegheny Chinquapins?

I am sure smstone can shead some light on this. What do ya'll think about Allegheny chinkapins? I just recieved about fifty seeds along with some KY VA resistant cross american chestnut seeds that I am starting in the refridgerator. The chinquapin nut seem too small for deer! What is everyones thoughts?

I have a few. They taste awesome and I am sure deer will love them. I had some at the house and they produced nuts, planted them and with the drought they took a beating. Still alive and hopefully this next year they will be back producing.

I will try some (eat). I can see turkeys eating them, but the seem too small for deer to fool with. Really neat shrub, I am looking forward to getting some started.

I have some.They are hard to start from seed. The first time I tried to start them from seed was a total failure the second time I got about 75% germination. Some of them produced in three years.

Fill me in. How did you germinate them. I have cold stratified chestnuts and assumed it was the same. Can you give any pointers?

The first time I started them outside in pots as soon as I got them (about this time of year). The second time I started them in my basement under plant lights around the middle of February. If I was doing it again I would start them in my basement around the first of January. I think the biggest problem I have is a tendency to over watering the seeds before they sprout, and they rot.

I have had a few for several years now. They grew fairly quickly and began putting on nuts within a couple of years. Here is my issue.... I have native American Chestnuts on my properties and the chestnut blight is always present. Even though they are somewhat resistant, my bushes get it frequently and die back to the ground, then sucker back. Im not sure Ill ever get to the size where they have significant production though.

They are still working on that resistant strain....i sure hope they achieve it one day.
