little help from all you nut lovers on here...i have hard time telling one acorn from the next. i know the big chestnut oaks but after that i struggle advice please. im still looking and going to do so tomorrow for that area that deer are hitting them at any pointers?? thanks

Look at the USDA plants database for images or another good source. Be leery of google images. Get a Good ID book and just walk the woods identifying the different oaks until you are proficient.

Just remember that most acorns from the white oak group have caps that are nodular and bumpy, while caps from the red oak varieties have "scales." This rule isn't always true, but true for most common varieties in TN, such as White, Mountain Chestnut, Post, and Chinkapin (for the whites), and Northern and Southern Red, Black, Scarlet, and Pin (for the reds).

Any of the Tree-ID articles have a link to Petersons Field Guide to Eastern Trees. that is the best source I've found for identifying trees while you are in the field. Throw one in your pack and pull it out whenever you come across a tree you dont know. You will be able to learn the major mast-producing trees in no time.
