Here is the graph of the 47% -- a.k.a. "non-payers" -- by state. The ten states with the highest share of "non-payers" are in the states colored red. Most are in southern (and Republican) states. Meanwhile, the 13 states with the smallest share of "non-payers" are in blue. Most are northeastern (and Democratic) states.

First things first: please post a link to where that map originated. I searched the Tax Foundation's web site, and I could not find it anywhere.

It would be interesting to see what the map would look like if retirees were removed from the equation. I was able to find 2010 census numbers that identified state populations and retirees receiving Social Security benefits, and 9.2% of the U.S. population is "retired"; however, 14.9% of Florida residents are retired, 13.3% of South Carolina, 12.7% of Alabama, 13.3% of Arkansas, etc. Would this change the equation? Maybe, maybe not.

Also, in sheer numbers, the libtard states still have a far, far larger number of nonpayers. For example, 37% of California are non-payers, or roughly 13.8 million - more than 10 times tha non-payers in Mississippi (provided MS's number is 45%; it's hard for me to see some of the numbers) and in fact almost 5 times the entire population of the state of Mississippi. Massachussetts' vaunted 27% accounts for more non-payers than the entire population of Idaho, one of the bottom 10.

Lastly, the map sayis it is based on 2008 - i.e. pre-zerO - numbers. Need to see 2012 numbers for a truly relevant picture.

Saw the same map on CNN last night. Pretty simple. The 47% are the poorest states.

Obviously there's some "apples to oranges" comparison going on between this map and "the 47%". The highest percentage shown is Mississippi with 45% -- so tell me how you can get a national average that is higher than the highest state average?

I think it is funny how you can put some silly stats on a map and try to prove a point with it. I would love to see a stat on how many of the people who pay no tax and live on welfare vote D. Or look at the stats of how many small business job creators vote R. While I would love for everyone to get a nice house and food and have plenty of money to go do what they want. It is not feasible to think that the govt can supply that to all. The tax system in the US needs to be fixed so people understand what they are paying and what it is going to. I would bet that a rather large percentage of people on both sides have no idea what they really pay in taxes and what the politicians are talking about when they quote % s

More class warfare.
Boring.

How about we discuss the horrific progressive/socialist policy that CAUSED that number to be so high. How about the policy that is crushing our economy and putting so many people out of work?
How about our draconian progressive tax code that should be scrapped entirely by Constitutional amendment. THEN have a discussion about a flat tax with no exemptions or a Fair tax type model.

How about we talk about how progressive/socialists/Democrats are burying us under regulations and stripping us of our rights.

Retirees pay taxes on SS benefits. Any poll or MSM commentary that tries to explain the 47% using Retires, are full of BS.

PS, You can thank Clinton for taxing Seniors and their SS benefits. ;\) You are forced to pay into it and taxed when you collect.
