On occasion, a deer antler will have a "bulge" in one of the tines. (see pic below because I don't know how to explain it) I've also seen the same deer with several of these on different tines. What causes this?

If Im not mistaken it is caused by a parasite that eats into it while in velvet.

"Acorns" in vertical tines are usually caused by damage to the growing antler. In essence, the velvet of the vertical tine was cut by a branch or briar. I've seen bucks with every vertical tine on one side with an acorn at the exact same height.

Got a wall hanger with four on one side, all at the same length. Have always wondered how much longer the tines would have been had they not had the bulge.
