Besides longer casts and high gear ratio. Why do so many people switch from spinning to baitcasting? I don't see myself buying one any time soon, but I was wondering, because there must be something pretty good about them if so many people use them. I just love my spinning reels.

I like the lure control for one thing.. when flipping I can pretty much put a jig and pig in a coffee cup.. also when casting anything from a floating worm to a crankbait I can pretty much put my bait where I want it.. I do use a spinning reel but only have 3-4 where I have a dozen baitcasters.. Its kinda like comparing pump guns to over and unders they both get the job done its just preferance..

I don't see a lot of advantage to them. The majority of people who fish them as a main reel are better at casting them than spinning reels mainly due to the repeated use. Give them a spinning reel only and they will get good with them also. I can throw one just as far as I can throw the other with the exception of light line where a spinning reel is far better suited in my opinion.
I have about as many spinning reels as I do bait casters. All but 2 are Abu Garcia models. The other 2 are Mitchell which at that time I believe were made by Abu Garcia.
If all I had was one or the other I could still do all the different type of bait fishing I do. It would not be as fun without the spinning reels for drop shot or other light line and light tackle applications.

Its easier to control the line & stop lure using a thumb istead of having to catch the line with a whole hand imo.also using braided line dosent twist up.never back lashed a spinning reel though lol

I have and use both, it just depends on what I'm throwing. Bigger lures like heavy jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, Carolina rigs, large swimbaits, and most topwater, I throw on baitcasting gear. Grubs, tubes, smaller jigs, smaller Texas rigs, smaller swimbaits, flukes, small topwater, and small cranks are thrown on spinning. If its over 1/4 ounce it usually gets thrown on a baitcaster, under is on spinning. A baitcaster will also handle heavier line. 10 pound test and under goes on my spinning rigs, 10 and over goes on baitcaster.

Spinning reels can cast lighter lures farther, but produce line twist. Bait cast reels don't twist line, but you can get terrible bird nest tangles if you are 't good or careful.
As you know from your spinning reels, you can slow down and stop a lure with one finger. It isn't necessary to use your whole hand.
