well i can tell you from personal experience, you need to upgrade your reel. My grandfather had that exact reel, and as a 13 year old i took it off a pole and threw it in the water!

Probably so. It's an Abu Garcia...somethingoranother. I don't remember what model. I bought it at Wal Mart in 1995, maybe 1996. So yeah, I probably need an upgrade.
FWIW...I tied the crankbait on and noticed the line in between the thread of the O-ring on the bill. I thought it was odd, and that I needed to fix it. Instead, I got lazy and didn't; I thought it'd be ok.. Thus, the lost crankbait and the birdnest. NEXT TIME I will re-tie the crankbait if I don't think it's right.

I hear the REVO reels are awesome, problem is my 1978 year model 5500C wont die on me. That thing is still butter smooth casting and a beautiful drag. I have 3 newer Garcia reels I use as backups or for my kids but the older one is still the best one of the bunch. If one ever dies, I'll get a REVO

There is nothing like a good baitcaster will always outlast and outperform a spinning reel. Besides that the rods made for baitcasters are built better. I love my Abu Garcia Recore 61, and Shimano Curado. Im from Washington State and I know they can hold up to anything.

I carry 5 baitcasters and two spinning reels in my boat. The baitcasters get all the work.
5500C are the best reels ever made in my humble opinion!

I got 3 that I can't get to backlash no matter how hard I throw em. The key is getting a quality reel and getting them setup right. Spend at least $150 on the reel. You may get away with less with a few reels, but $150 class reel is a good baseline. Pfluger president or lews tment series are good quality $150 setups. I got a couple pfluger Patriarchs that cast like a dream and are a big step up from the President depending on your budget. They are about $225-250 depending on where you get them. That's a lot for a reel, but you wouldn't believe the difference.

KMD... Let me hold them. I'll show you how to bird nest them.
$150 is not a baseline. There are tons of quality reels under that. Abu Garcia Orra is $99 and I'll put it up against any $200 reel. It's as smooth as my Revos. The Abu 5500 C3 reels last a lifetime and they are less than $150. I've got several that are 20 years old now and still run fine.
I've been throwing some type of bait caster for 30 years now and there is not a reel out there that is not going to bird nest some time. If you watch BASS you will see the best in the world do it a lot!
