My neighbor sat and watched 10 coyotes rip apart 2 cats yesterday about 200 yards across the road from him AT 11:30 AM!!. We (the area)have had multiple dog attacks and thousands of dollars of vet bills.

The only way we are going to start reducing their numbers is to shoot them.

The question is:

Does the 100 yard of a visible dwelling cover private property also? Or is that just public land?

I have a neighbor to the left that is against us killing them, where I would set up would be roughly 70 yards from their house pointing the other direction.

Thanks for any information you can give me

The 100 yd restriction only applies to public lands or waters.

The issue of reckless endangerment comes into play in any urban hunting. In addition, if there are city or county ordinances against the discharge of firearms, you may have to deal with local law enforcement on those issues. The State AG Opininion on legal hunting superceding such ordinaces only means that you may ultimiately prevale on appeal if you are convicted for violating such ordinances.

Coyote hunting has not proven to be a very effective method of coyote control.

Thanks for the information SCN.

We are in knox county, I will check at the courthouse for any ordinances they might have. I would be slug hunting, shooting into 40 acres of hardwoods.

I agree that hunting isn't very effective but its about all we can do that I know of.

I have a neighbor wanting to poison them, I am not sure on the legality of that and there are way too many neighborhood animals running free to risk something like that.

Any suggestions for controlling them would be greatly appreciated.

Trapping is normally a more effective control measure. The soft-catch traps and some of the snares will work and will not harm domestic animals. However, there is a great deal of skill involved in those sets.

The best solution will likely be to not allow pets to run free. While I'm sure it has happened, it is very difficult for a coyote to come into a fenced in yard and kill a pet.

We have been thinking of trying the trapping, just wasn't sure how quickly they would become weary of them...

I agree on the controlled pets, we have subdivisions directly to the left of us and it is a constant food supply for them...

Thanks again for your help

416...get with me sometime and I can show you how to trap them. with a little recon, you can probably find some very good places for snares and leg holds.

The creek bed going up to well 2 is the perfect place to hone your skills with the traps.

I came home from work one night to find one of my pets dead and another fightng for his life with a coyote, this in the middle of Diamond Bar, CA. I yelled and ran at the coyote and he jumped a small fence and disappeared.

I have no problem with local laws, nothing like that at all because the solution is right at hand... where did they go, oh yeah. Here. Kill them all.
