I asked about this over on the TWRA forum here and it was confirmed. I had heard rumors of this around the last week of July. This comes as a bit of a surprise because it was so sudden...no meetings or open forums about it. What is worse about it, is that most of the reasons they give in this article are false. I know there had been some complaints from people up near Townsend by people looking for gold up there...particularly the kayaker crowd. This is just my thoughts about it...I think one of the kayak folks was probably sticking his or her nose into somebody's business and decided that they didn't like what the gold prospector was doing...and either worked for an organization for the environment or knew somebody that did...and got the backing behind getting dredging banned. I do know there were several environmental groups behind it.

I'm telling you folks....it's getting to the point you aren't going to be able to do ANYTHING anymore. There's somebody trying to get everything made illegal. I rather enjoy looking for gold and such...we had rules and regulations we had to abide by and for the most part, everybody followed those rules.

Crow -

I understand your passion for mining and don't know too much on this issue but you may have been a bit mislead. From my understnading, gold mining in Tennessee in water resources with machinery or heavy equipment has never been legal. I believe if falls under the Water Protection Act or something similar. It's not a TWRA law (Title 70), so I'm not too familiar with it.

We could run little gas operated dredges in TN with hose size restrictions. All you had to do in the Cherokee Ntl Forest was apply for a free permit. Basically they gave you a reminder of the rules and they had restrictions on where you could look (areas that were considered non wilderness areas). The new restrictions on this can be read more in detail on the TN GPAA forum. Basically it took away something we could do recreationally. Only a handful of people were even active in TN gold prospecting...and all of it was centered in the eastern portion of the state. People that didn't prospect don't see the big deal about it. Well one day hunting and fishing will be a hobby that only a few minorities enjoy doing and somebody will do away with it all too.

Can you still pan, or is looking for gold at all illegal now?

You can still pan and run a manual sluice box. Just no dredging. Dredging was the only way to come out breaking even on gas and time invested and in some cases, making profit. In my personal opinion...I think the soaring gold prices had a little to do with it. At $1,800 an ounce and climbing...the state was seeing money being taken from its owned land and potentially people making money that was tax free. They know panning ain't gonna recover enough to amount to anything but dredging....in the right spot you can get an ounce in a weekend or two.
