Went to Shelby Farms to fish while my wife ran a race. Tied on a crankbait and cast...only to watch the cranbait sail to the middle of the lake, leaving me with this. The urge to throw the reel in the lake was pretty strong, but I overcame it. Now I remember why I don't use baitcasters that often.

Cant stand em. I fish with a spinning reel right beside 2 buddie who throw nothing but baitcasters. Just never had any use for them.

I have 4 spinning reels and 2 baitcasting reels. One is rigged for trout, one is for bass/trout, and the other two are rigged for bass. One baitcaster actually has dust on it. My spinning reels don't.

John, the first problem is that the cranking handle is on bassakwards.....Best thing you can do with it is break it off at a comfortable heighth and bring it next time you come to the "hills" scouting.

well i can tell you from personal experience, you need to upgrade your reel. My grandfather had that exact reel, and as a 13 year old i took it off a pole and threw it in the water!

Probably so. It's an Abu Garcia...somethingoranother. I don't remember what model. I bought it at Wal Mart in 1995, maybe 1996. So yeah, I probably need an upgrade.

FWIW...I tied the crankbait on and noticed the line in between the thread of the O-ring on the bill. I thought it was odd, and that I needed to fix it. Instead, I got lazy and didn't; I thought it'd be ok.. Thus, the lost crankbait and the birdnest. NEXT TIME I will re-tie the crankbait if I don't think it's right.

I hear the REVO reels are awesome, problem is my 1978 year model 5500C wont die on me. That thing is still butter smooth casting and a beautiful drag. I have 3 newer Garcia reels I use as backups or for my kids but the older one is still the best one of the bunch. If one ever dies, I'll get a REVO

There is nothing like a good baitcaster will always outlast and outperform a spinning reel. Besides that the rods made for baitcasters are built better. I love my Abu Garcia Recore 61, and Shimano Curado. Im from Washington State and I know they can hold up to anything.

I carry 5 baitcasters and two spinning reels in my boat. The baitcasters get all the work.

5500C are the best reels ever made in my humble opinion!

I got 3 that I can't get to backlash no matter how hard I throw em. The key is getting a quality reel and getting them setup right. Spend at least $150 on the reel. You may get away with less with a few reels, but $150 class reel is a good baseline. Pfluger president or lews tment series are good quality $150 setups. I got a couple pfluger Patriarchs that cast like a dream and are a big step up from the President depending on your budget. They are about $225-250 depending on where you get them. That's a lot for a reel, but you wouldn't believe the difference.

KMD... Let me hold them. I'll show you how to bird nest them.

$150 is not a baseline. There are tons of quality reels under that. Abu Garcia Orra is $99 and I'll put it up against any $200 reel. It's as smooth as my Revos.
The Abu 5500 C3 reels last a lifetime and they are less than $150. I've got several that are 20 years old now and still run fine.

I've been throwing some type of bait caster for 30 years now and there is not a reel out there that is not going to bird nest some time. If you watch BASS you will see the best in the world do it a lot!

Spinning reels... I have a couple of Abu Orra reels that are awesome. The spinning rods they make today are as good as the BC rods. Youre not going to get the quality from Walmart you would somewhere like BPS. A good quality spinning reel and rod will do anything a BC will do and more in some cases. Fishing light line the spinning reel excels.

And that is most of my fishing, with 4# and 6# lines, with the ocassional 8# line.

If the crankbait had not come off, I probably would not have had a birdnest.

If you are fishing, throwing at targets, there is no way you can be as accurate with a spinning reel as with a Bait caster,no way.

No,I dont crap fish, not sure what that has to do with it,but if you control distance with a spinning rod,as good as you can with a caster, you must be pretty bad with a caster.

Yes, Im with FootballHunter on this one, with a baitcaster controlling distance is a breeze. With a spinning rig you let it fly and hope you got it right. I know with practice you can get fairly accurate with a spinning rig but no way as accurate as with the baitcaster. Definately not on longer casts.

I was almost 17 years old before I fished with a spinning rig. Started throwing baitcasters when I was 9.

I must be the exception then because I'm 100 times more accurate with a spinning reel than I could ever be with a baitcaster.I have no trouble with judging the distance with a baitcaster, but accuracy, forget it.Give me a spinning reel and I can put it on or within inches of anywhere I need to.I've all but quit using my baitcasters. But that's just me.

I Use baitcasters only with crankbaits and occasionally with spinner baits, and only in daylight. I fished with Spinning reels for 40 years before I bought my first baitcaster. All my reels, spinning, baitcast, and fly reels all have left-hand retrieve. It costs a little more to find a left hand baitcaster, but it's well worth it to me. I can't get a good feel for the bait, nor cn I get good hookset, with the rod in my left hand. It just feels too WEIRD.

I prefer left handed crank too. Also I don't mess with baitcasters. I have trolled with them on a friend's boat but that was just letting line out and not casting. I didn't want to build a beautiful eagle's nest with his line....

If I can find it I'll send you something Catman. I have a Abu Garcia 5501 C3 that a guy gave me. Reel appears to be new. I took it apart to clean it and the factory grease was still in place. The guy changed the handle on it so that's not factory. It had a couple of scratches on it but you had to look hard to find them. I put some line on it and put it under the seat on my boat for a guy that fished with me who is left handed in case he needed a spare while we were fishing. I keep a few spares with me all the time.

I'll look under the seat and see if it's still there. Pm me your address again and if I find it I will send it to you. It will be good for bass or catfish... Or them big carp. It's a heck of a reel.

I have no experience yet with baitcasters but I think there are surely some people who can cast a spinning reel just as accurately

There are casts/techniques that cannot be made with spinning gear that can be made with bc. That's why you should have and use both.

Quality equipment, good line, and lots of practice will make you a better angler. Put a gallon bucket out in the yard practice different casts. Flipping, pitching, sidearm, backhanded, etc.

Baitcasters are just another tool in the toolbox. People that don't learn when and how to use them are the people that think they can fix anything with duct tape, bailing wire, and a flat head screwdriver.

Jigs and a wide variety of soft plastics.Pitching IMO is easier w/ spinning tackle than with baitcasting gear.Flipping is better done with a baitcaster.

I think you missed my point Jerry. It was a joke to point out a casting situation I have never encountered is a backlash with a spinning reel.

I fish both on 99 out of 100 trips.

No i got silverfox i was making a comment on backlashing baitcasters. LOL!...Actually when you use baitcasters long enough backlashes do become minimal.Like i said earlier once braid came along i went back to spinning tackle. The biggest reason i went to baitcasting was because you were able to use heavier line, back when we all used mono. You weren't able to use much more than 12lb. line on bass sized spinning tackle.

There might have been several different factors with my reel. The line might be old. I don't change my line that often on my baitcasters, being I don't use them that much...I do change the line on my spinning reels; I might change them once a year or two before I go on my trout fishing trip. I don't use baitcasters as much as my spinning rods, so I might've been a little out of practice. And I didn't pay attention to the knot I tied--I was fishing early in the morning without any caffeine. \:D

For some reason I just had a wild hair and thought I'd try fishing with it. I'll just re-spool and try it again.

I have, well not a backlash, but a whole bunch of twisted up line, happens every so often.I rarely fish with spinning rods anymore though.

I want to see all the spinning reel fans fish a 6XD all day with one. As far as baitcasters I've always owned Shimano - either Curados or Chronarchs but this year I bought 6 of the Lew's tournament pro reels. These are the absolute best reels I've ever used. This winter I'll be selling alot of Curado 200E's and replacing them with Lew's.

I haven't fished the Lews reels... I've had a couple of guys tell me they feel like a BPS reel. I can't say that would be bad since I bought a pro qualifier for deep cranking when they were out of the Revo winch and I love it. It's my first BPS reel. Everything else I have is Abu Garcia.

its better to spend a 170.00 bucks to avoid 200.00 worth of aggrivation! abu revo's or shimano curado reels wont let ya down. If you dont usually fish with a baitcaster stay away from the high speed (7.0) geaded reels until you get comfortable with a regular bait caster.
